whats wrong with my bostons eye

by wanda arnold
(dan ville ,va )

My 7 year old Boston has a dark spot on one eye ball that looks like an extra pupil. I never noticed it before until we were outside in the sun light. Could someone tell me if they know what this would be? Got me a little worried now that I noticed it. Thanks, Wanda Arnold

Iris cysts
by: Anonymous

These would be iris cysts. I noticed them in both my bostons eyes 3 yrs ago but slot more have developed. We're currently living in Germany with the military and the Germans don't know much about them. They keep saying they happen in golden retrievers but have nothing to correct the problem. As we're fly back to the states very soon I finally found out about a slightly more experienced vet office and he will be getting another opinion on them as they fill up half of one eye now and he's always pawing at them. The fluid in the eyes are now reddish as I think some have ruptured over time.

I read that some eye specialists have very fine needles that can remove them. But this doesn't mean they will stop developing. The vet mentioned my dogs are caused from poor sinus drainage. It really really worries me as one eye is starting to get larger from all the extra fluid they cause.

Cysts
by: Patty

My Boston Joe Joe, has these spots too. He has been to my veterinarian and to an ophthalmologist. I've been told that they are cysts and do not cause any discomfort to him. The ophthalmologist wasn't worried about them but more worried about his cataracts. My veterinarian said that it wouldn't be good if they rupture or bleed (the cysts) but the ophthalmologist didn't have concern about this. I keep my eye on them and if one should I'll have to take him to the vet. He has had them for years now without any troubles. In my opinion I think it's a good idea for Boston Terrier owners to have their dog's eyes checked out regularly by a vet and get a referral to see an ophthalmologist if necessary since Bostons can have issues with their eyes. I hope this helped you out. Good luck!

small black spots in my bostons cornia
by: Anonymous

My Boston terrier is 7 and has a few of this black spots in the inside of his eyeball, like parts of his pupil. These dark spots even move around in the inside of his eye when his eyeball moves. I had a vet take a look and she wasn't too sure what it could be. She recommended I see professional. Any one know if its a danger for my Boston or what this could be?

Opacities?
by: Kathleen (webmaster)

Did some checking... this could possibly be what is referred to as an "opacity". Reference:What Your Dog is Trying to Tell You.

To summarize, opacities usually affect either the lens or cornea, and may range from milky, to green-white, blue-white or even black. They may slightly see-through or opaque, and can be caused from a number of issues, either inherited or from injury. They are not usually an emergency situation, but a vet should look at the eyes to make a diagnosis and make sure it isn't something that could threaten your dog's sight.
