Trouble with frequent ear infections

I have a Boston who has had frequent ear infections since the age of 7 mns. She will be 2 in April. It mostly effects one ear at a time and usually is the left ear. It seems like once a month we are having to take her to the doc. They give her MalOtic and this will clear it up, but it just returns. The doc. said she might have food allergies. Could this cause ear infections? We have switched her to Purina One, chicken and rice, trying to limit to one source of protein. Sometimes she will not have an infection, but swelling of her penna in the ear. It usually gets very swollen and red and hot. The MalOtic will work on this also, but it always returns. She seems to have a lot of foul, dark, almost bloody drainage from the infected ear and I do clean her ears when I see signs of the dark wax. She will scratch and scratch, sometimes making the ear bleed. I am just not sure what to do for her... It seems like we are taking her to the Vet every month for the same problem. I know it has to be uncomfortable for her and I just hate it. Any help or advice?

Ear yeast infection
by: Elizabeth

I have had the same problem with my BT, Barkley. He had his first ear infection when he was about 5 or 6 months old The vet said it was yeast and prescribed ear drops and oral medication. The infection cleared up, but has returned several times in the last 2 years. I have recently started cleaning his ears twice a week with diluted vinegar, just soaking a cotton ball and wiping the ears out. It seems to be keeping the yeast infection from returning and has saved us hundreds in vet bills!

Ear Infections

Ours don't have ear infections all the time but we did have it once. I don't know what the vet gave us but it was in a tube and it worked very nicely. We do use Blue Buffalo (The fish and sweet potato). I put a spoon full of Plain Yogurt(not artificially sweetened)mixed in their bowl every day. We also feed a vitamin daily. I clean their ears everytime I give them a bath. The ear infection has not returned. You may want to find an additional supplement for dogs with a lowered immune system.

I use Veterinarians Best - Ear Wash and Dry - It is at Petsmart and Petco. It is a two bottle set - it is also natural - no alcohol. This seems to keep them clean and dry. Read the reviews - that is the reason I chose it.

You might also look into a higher quality dog food like Blue Buffalo or Orijen - something that contains pro-biotics (like in yogurt). Your dog sounds like it has a yeast imbalance. Hope that helps.
