Trend to down size Boston Terriers to tea cup dogs

I am a breeder of medium sized Boston Terriers. I love the breed, and feel that a medium sized boston is the best sized boston for families. I am against the trend that seems to be popular amongst many breeders. Many of these breeders are breeding to try to get smaller and smaller bostons. This is not what the breed was intended to be. If you want a minituare dog, get a Yorkie. They are lovely pets. Don't breed bostons who are not going to be family friendly. The last thing you want is for a child to accidentally step on a puppies leg and because it is the size of a twig, snap in half. Bostons were bred to be America's Bull Dog. Not Americas Chiwawa.

I Love my Rocky
by: Cris

Our Boston Terrier is around 38 pounds. He is THE BEST!!!!! He's very muscular and powerful but has a GREAT temperament. He's extremely gentle with our three kids and also protective of his peeps. He even becomes my "lap-dog" at times, even at his size. I wouldn't change anything about the Boston breed - they are THE BEST dogs. And living in the Boston area - makes him even better for us!

I love Them!!
by: Bandit's mom

I have a min. boston terrier that weights 12 pounds and he is almost 3 years old.....His mom and his dad both were the bigger sized boston terriers...His daddy weighted 25 pounds and his momma weights 19 pounds....so we just got lucky and had one in the litter...The vet also told me that One of the parents carried the gene that made Bandit a min. So sometimes you can get a small boston terrier with out trying....And i have to say that he is the best boston i have ever had!!!

TOTALLY agree!!

I have a 26 lb. female Boston, and she is not at all overweight for her build. She is sturdy, muscle-packed, strong, and athletic. She is very "bulldoggy", and I am SO glad she is. I've seen little frail under 10 lb. Bostons, and I personally prefer a bigger dog. Bostons were originally bred to be much bigger than ANY we see today, so they have been bred down for decades, this is nothing new. But downsizing them to fit nicely into a designer bag is just disturbing to me. I personally believe that Bostons should be beefy, bulldoggy, and healthy. Dogs are not accessories!

Teacuping

This is a growing trend among all the breeds - all because of Hollywood, I think. This is such a travesty and mutation for the dog world. I have pure-bred dogs from reputable breeders as well as rescue dogs (mixed and pure-bred) pulled from shelters. Greedy folks who only care about the money and not about the breed or the dogs individually will continue to propogate horrific genetic problems and mutations for the poor dogs (and cats too - look at the extreme Persians and the complications they have). This will continue to be the trend until we educate and make the paying public understand that they are only contributing to the problem by purchasing these dogs. It's all driven by greed and people having skewed values.

My big Boston
by: Debbie T

Hi,

I agree with you! We have a 32 lb Boston who is pure muscle. He does everything with us including riding bicycles off road, swimming, hiking. He can do all that a lab or medium size dog can do. He never gets tired. If we add another dog to our family it would be another "big" Boston.
