Swollen Jada

My baby's swollen face Eyes looking better

Hi,
For the second time in her life, I glanced over at my Jada and her eyes were very swollen and her mouth was very swollen and she had hives by her ears. Her face was over double the size of usual. Also, both times I have been hours from a vet, first time we were at the lake, this time were living in a city where I call vet emergency, which is over and hour away, and the guy speaks no english and doesn't know what I'm saying. Her breathing seems fine. I gave her 25 mg Benadryl and her eyes have gone down but not her mouth. First time we thought we had narrowed it down to peanut allergy or bug bite, but this time she was inside, I see no bugs anywhere and there was no peanuts or nuts around, not even the garbage. She did have booster shots about 6 hours ago.
Has this happened to anyone? Does anyone have advice? It's so scary, I love my BT's like children.

I have the exact same problem.

I have 3 bostons and only one has allergies like this. However, it happens after vacinations and when she got stung by a bee once. As long as she is not having trouble breathing its ok but that can happen quickly. So my vet gave me a couple extra prednisone pills incase we were far from a vet. The benadryl is also good to keep on hand, I use liquid because it gets directly into their blood stream.

Swelling

Since I posted my first comment, my BT Scarlett had a Lyme disease shot, and she had a reaction to it, sore and achy and feverish, and the doctor suggested a Benadryl. She had that and the symptoms abated. When she had her booster a couple of days ago, we gave her the Benadryl right away, and she had no reaction. Jada's swelling could be from her vaccination, since it was just a few hours before. Keep Benadryl on hand and with you when you are away from home, and let anyone babysitting her for you know what to do in case it happens while she is in your care. Good luck.

Jada

We are not sure what exactly caused the allergic reaction still but we always keep Benadryl on hand. I definitely think Jada has bad allergies. She has been losing more and more hair all the time. I had contributed it to fungus, which we had tested and she did come up positive in a hair sample test which we treated but she is still losing hair. I won't keep treating it as I am pregnant and the drugs can cause deformities in babies. Besides the fact, I don't think the underlying cause is fungus as she doesn't have the ringworm patterns at all anymore and she doesn't scratch or seem at all uncomfortable. I also thought maybe stress because it would happen when we left her for a few weeks with friends but it happens when she's here too. So I am quite sure now, it's probably allergies. I would love to find a dog naturopath for advice on some natural remedies or immune system help. I am afraid to just go by the word of websites. Does anyone have similar problems with BT allergies/balding and do you give them any herbal supplements or natural remedies that have shown improvement?

This is a tough one to figure out. Definitely seems like an allergic reaction to SOMETHING... you did the right thing by giving her a Benadryl. Also a cool bath or rubdown with a wet cloth helps their comfort level. Unless you're willing to have her tested so you can find out with certainty where her sensitivity lies, you should probably always carry Benadryl, at least have some in the car or with you on vacation, when she is a part of her plans.Good luck to you, and please let us know if you find out. My female BT gets hives and swelling about once a summer, and I think it's a bug bite reaction, but I'm not sure. It's been after she's gone out to take care of business. May possibly be a certain insect that is hatching at that time. Otherwise, it's a mystery.

Allergies?
by: Mary

It sounds like allergies to me. For some reason allergies seem to be very common in Bostons. I would look around to see if there is a canine Allergy specialist that isn't ridiculously expensive. There are some supplements available online for doggie allergies, just do a google search.

Swollen face

Hi Sam. I know, it's scary. My Joe Joe has the same problem but it has only happened about three times and it has been from some type of insect bite. I give him benadryl too. My vet said to give it to him and if the swelling doesn't go down in about a half an hour give him a little more. It's scary because when they swell like that their airways swell to and they can have a hard time breathing and even die if you don't get them to a vet asap. Since you're far from a vet maybe they can give you an epi pen (sp?) to have on hand like they do people? Maybe you can try a specialist to work on figuring out what it is or a holistic vet. It could be something as simple as wheat or corn in her food? Let us know what you end up doing!
Good luck!
