Slipped Patella

by Kathy

I am thinking of rescuing a Boston Terrier. I just found out the one I am interested in has a slipped patella and most likely will require surgery. Can anyone offer me advice on this? Is this a big deal? Will this be a financial burden? Kathy

Patella Fixation

OK...I am happy with the results of the Patella Fixation I had on Howie. He is completely cured and has had no problems since stitch removal. If your dog needs it, by all means get it done. You will be thankful after watching your dog play normal again.

By the way, you can pay $5,000 for a dog when it is a puppy, and there is no guarantee that it won't develop Patella problems!

Sophie

My Sophie has the same thing as well. We are lucky and live near Madison Veterinary Teaching School where you can have a lot done at half the cost. Sophie is a white Boston knowing that when we got her she may have some kind of issues we love her anyway.

It doesn't bother her - she is in no pain with her leg. The vets want us to wait till she is 1 to get it fixed to make sure she is fully grown they said the surgery would take better. But I tell you what it doesn't stop her from being the bully in the house. She is one of 3 that we have. She's a tough little cookie.

Slipped Patella

I work with a veterinary surgeon, but I'm not a vet. We performed a patella repair for the same problem on a similiar dog. It was not a difficult procedure and i think the dog will make a full recovery.

My advice would be to consult a vet. And in general, you are better off buying a dog that is healthy from the start..

All the best

Patella Fixation
by: Anonymous

Make sure you understand what all is involved with curing a Patella Slip. My Howie just had one. Three different Vets told me that the only cure was sugery (Patella Fixation).
This past Thursday (3-13-08) we had it done. He went in the afternoon before surgery and stayed till the afternoon of the day after surgery. The surgeon thought everything went real well and that he will make a good recovery.
I have listed things below that you may want to consider.
1. Cost for pre-op and op -$1300.

2. Dog must be kept in-active for 10 to 14 days. May need to be caged!

3. Anti-biotic and pain medication administered for a week.

4. The dog should be carried in and out for potty time

5. The dog will be groggy for a full day following procedure

6. Bandage comes off after five days which will allow dog to lick and/or bite on the sore. Will probably need an "E" collar

7. Incision should be checked several times a day for excessive redness and/or infection.

8. Stiches come out after 14 days

Although that sounds like a lot of bother, it is no chore for someone who already has a dog and loves them.
Someone who not yet owns a Boston but is aware of the condition, would benefit themselves and the dog by taking them and getting the problem fixed. You will "rescue" the dog in more ways than one.
$1300 is a lot of money. If someone else in the family has to do without some things in order to pay the surgeon, they should be made aware of it before proceeding.

My Howie is doing fine and I am happy I had it done. I probably won't have to watch him limp the rest of his life or see him in pain when he steps on the leg wrong.
