Sensitive Haunches, Shaking and Yelping

Hi;

My 4 year-old Boston is currently on meds.

A few days ago, we noticed that she was very sensitive around the butt area. Picking her up as usual with her sitting on my forearm while I hold her back is impossible now as she yelps when I attempt to do so. She also cannot take even the lightest of touches to her haunch area without yelping. After she yelps, she shakes/trembles continuously for at least ten minutes.

I took her to the vet last night. At about 2am, the vet saw us. She said that it might be a muscle spasm, or a spinal issue which could lead to paralysis. The vet said that she was leaning more towards a muscle spasm, but could not explain why. She told us to keep her calm. No fetch or running for at least a week. She also prescribed a muscle relaxant, and some sort of non-steroidal gel that we shoot into her mouth.

The vet said that the most likely cause of this was her twisting or sliding while playing, and that it pulled a muscle, or (God forbid) damaged her spine.

We are doing what we can by keeping her movements slow, and administering the meds, but I was hoping all you BT lovers out there could offer some insight.

Thanks for your time.

Andrew

Well guys, she finished her meds and she's back to her old self. Thank the maker too because I was worried sick that she might have a spinal issue leading to paralysis, and I don't want my girl is some sort of wheelie contraption like thet BT from that J-lo movie.

Thanks for your support guys.

Same Thing
by: Daysha

My 5 year old male boston did the same thing it lasted about 2 1/2 weeks. I thought there was an issue with his rear end or maybe his knees I wasn't sure. I took him to the vet they gave him a full look over took blood and x-rays. Nothing came up everything was normal, all we could think of was maybe a pinched nerve. After the same type of meds for two weeks he was back to normal. Thank god because I was really upset that we could find what was wrong.....Hang in there!

Pain

Did your vet do an X-ray or other type of test? Be sure to call around and ask other vets what they would do. Just say you want a verbal second opinion on what processes should be done.

Our 3 bostons have never experienced this type of pain but one of them had the luxating patella (bad knee). She never cried out with pain but she would stop dead in her tracks and refused to walk.

Good Luck and be sure to write back what you find out.
