Seizure

My Boston Terrier Buster is almost ten years of age and he just a few days ago had 2 seizures and I am very concerned about him. The vet put him on Phenobarbital 32.4 mg and he is sleeping a lot and stumbling and is just not himself. He has only been on the medicine for 3 days and I am scared that it is too strong for him because he can't even pick his leg up to pee. What do we need to do???

Brain tumor caused severe seizures in Boston Terrier
by: cydrun

My 8 year-old male BT, Clyde, was diagnosed with a brain tumor, Glioma, after having continuous seizures for several hours. The neurologist said this tumor is deep in the brain so we opted not to use a chemo-therapy regime, along with steroids and anti-seizure medicine. Over several months, we weened Clyde off the steroids and phenobarbital while increasing the potassium bromide. It's been six months since he's had a seizure; he's mostly himself, other than a bit overweight. (Steroids increase the appetite.) It's been a small fortune to treat his condition, but about half was covered by VPI, our pet insurance.
Hope others don't have to go through this to get their pets healthy again.

Siezures & Boston Terriers...
by: Dan

Our 8yr old Boston "Merry" recently passed away because of problems with seizures. The vet put her on Phenobarbital in an attempt to control them. The drug was working but the seizures continued till she was no longer able to move on her own power.

If you Boston has a seizure or several siezures its worth the time to have the vet check them out. You can decide if you want to put them on the medication or not.

It turns out that Merry was walking in 3 foot left hand circles. The vet suspected a tumor on the brain or brain stem. They always turn to the side that is affected. The circles along with drooling, head shaking and being unable to stand are all signs of a seizure. If you see this type of behavior get them checked out.

I write this in memory of a dog that gave us so much for so little in return.

Mine had it too!

My Boston had his first seizure when he was about 7. The vet wanted to put him on meds but I said no. I wanted to see if he would have another one. He did but only about 1 a year. One of them lasted longer than I liked, but the vet said as long as they don't last more than 4 minutes not to worry. He gave me a syringe of Phenobarbital to use in the rectum if it lasted longer than that. They never did and he was always fine after wards. I would get a 2nd opinion.....

Get a second opinion
by: Laura

Get a second opinion! My 12 year old Boston died from what they said was a seizure - he had never had anything like that before in his life - was always very healthy. If you put spot flea treatment on his back, I have heard that could be the cause of a seizure in older dogs, don't know if that is true, but if I could have my dog back, I would wash it off......Good Luck! Keep us posted.

Possibly

Your boston may be either epileptic or have hypogycemia- when the blood sugar is too low. When I had my little girl she was epileptic but they thought it was hypogycemia. I would take your boston to another vet for another opinion and see what they think it is. But for now just keep an eye out for anything that could hint to the seizures or side effects getting worse.
