Rainbow our 7 week pregnant Boston Terrier

We are the proud owners of a pregnant 12 lb. Boston Terrier. She is 3 years old and successfully tied 3 times. 60 days from her fist tie is Aug 8th, so that is my estimated due date for her. I am so nervous about her having to have a c-section and knowing when to take her in or just let nature take it's course. The father was smaller only 10 lbs, but a bit squattier for lack of better words. Any suggestions on what to watch out for in the case of an emergency c-section?

We are going for an x-ray today to see how many pups she has. This will ease my anxiety a little. My father in law is a retired veterinarian and he said the more pups she has the easier time she will have because they will be smaller. We are at day 55, so it shouldn't be long now. I have noticed she is slowly losing her mucus plug. Any idea on how long after that happens until she goes into labor? She acts fine just wants to be around myself or son all the time. Her temp yesterday was 100.5 so no drop. I will take it again today and see if there is any change. Please pray for an easy deliver for her and healthy pups. With 3 children it will be devastating for one not to make it, but I have prepared them for the possibility. I have all hands on deck and ready to come when called. Thanks for the words of advice, keep them coming :).

C-Section

Just don't rush into the C-Section! We had 5 litters from 4 different females and none of them needed the C-Section. Since your female is small you should only have 3-5 puppies most likely. Sounds like they will be small too.

Our first time was so crazy! She began labor at 11pm. She delivered her first pup at 9 am. It was a long night. When the books say don't let them go for more than a couple hours that means "HARD LABOR". The kind where they are pushing and you can see the movement of the pup. It's like they are taking a bm. If she is just panting and acting very uncomfortable, that is not the hard labor and that can last for a long time, especially on their first whelping.

Our second female went to day 67. I know that sounds crazy but perhaps she did not fertilize on her first tie. They tied about 4 times with a day in between each so it was still within the time to deliver. I thought she was going to explode and was so nervous. She began her labor around 9pm and started delivering around 1am finishing at 6am. We thought she was done with 6 puppies and went to sleep. When we woke up she had 7 puppies nursing.

The third female began labor in the morning...around 10am and finished delivering her 9 puppies around 5pm. Yes, 9. She is a bigger Boston at 24 pounds. It is so much easier during the day!

The fourth female was our friend's and we just had the daddy. She delivered with no c-section either.

So watch for the "Pushing". If she bows her back and looks like she's trying to have a bm then that is the hard labor. That shouldn't last too long. Look at what is in the canal and see if it is head first, feet first, or otherwise. Feet first is a little harder for her but it is still ok. We had several born feet first. Call the vet when she begins labor. (of course most females begin whelping just after the vet closes!) Even if they are closed just leave a message on their message machine. Know where your emergency vet is located just in case. Oh, and say lots of prayers.
But don't be too nervous because your female needs you to be calm and attentive. Be there for her!
