Proud owner of pure bred boston baby boy Potty issues!

I am the proud new mommy to a baby boy Boston Terrier baby he was born May 10 2011 by a couple who bred their male and female only 3 times for fun and the love of Bostons and are now having both pets fixed. So he was one of three little boys and picked last because he was "imperfect" in the minds of the other buyers because he had a tiny nub of a tail. I was told that I could have it removed but that little baby is perfect as far as me and my husband,3yr old daughter, and 16 month old are concerned. So this is my first indoor dog and really my first dog as an adult I have ever had. I was responsible and highly researched these pups for almost 10 years before owing one. I thought I knew everything until.... he pooped and peed on the tile floor several times. I bought him a leash and crate the day I went to pick him up with the intentions of out door potty training from the get go. How ever, we have had some ups and downs. He will pee out side but has only pooped once and I didn't want to use "puppy pads" because I do not intend on having him use the rest room indoors. So If any one one this board would take mercy on a new Boston owner and give me some advice I would love to hear it. ANY AT ALL! I am all ears about training regarding the potty and ANY thing else you would generously give me. I have wanted this dog since the first one I saw as a little girl so I want to be the best pet parent that I can possibly be. And sorry for the longish back story but I wanted to give you a bit of an idea of where he came from and who I am and that I didn't simply go out and buy a dog I thought was "cute" with out caring or understanding it's needs.

Potty training

Well, considering he is just 2 months old, there's no way he will be potty trained for a while. The signs you need to watch for will give you a heads up on when to take him out. He is too young to be in a crate for more than a couple of hours, perhaps 3 or so, without a potty break. Even if you paper train him inside while he is young, he will eventually get the hang of going outside, although all my Bostons would rather play with the newspapers than pee on them. I suggest you "Google" dog potty training or housebreaking, and you will find a plethora of information. In general, he goes out first thing in the morning, after every nap, after eating and after every play session. Use the same words each time. A friend says "Go do" for going outside; I just say "Go Pee Out" and "Go poop out," but whatever you choose, use them consistently. While the deed is being done, I say "Good girl, good pee out!" Then we go immediately inside for a treat. Be patient. My BTs where reliable by the time they were 6-8 months. Others find it takes longer, but once they get the idea, it usually sticks. When you can't be around to let your baby out of the crate, gate him in a room where he least damage will occur (usually a bathroom); pick up everything off the floor and put newspapers down on the entire floor. Hopefully, this will work. When he starts going in the same place, gradually remove the other papers until he is down to one small area where he goes. Good luck.

Potty training

There is NO secret to training a Boston as far as potty training except patience. It is going to take a little time for the pee accidents to stop maybe a few months. My female was like 8 months old before all accidents had stopped. My male was a little younger but he was like 5 or 6 months. They had the general idea but couldn't hold it and until this age did not have alot of self control. GOOD LUCK and welcome to the wonderful world of BOSTON TERRIERS, they are the greatest!

Boston's are not known for their potty training ease, I am sure you read about that. They CAN be trained, though...it just takes a longer time. The key is to somehow get your Boston to understand that you will not tolerate stubbornness. Ours became reliably potty trained when they were about 2 years old, so it does take a while. I think we could have spent a little more effort, but every one is going to be different anyway.

Keep the crate...we still use ours when we leave the house.
