Potty Training my Boston Terrier

Hi All,

My Boston is 9 weeks old, has been so stubborn about being Potty Trained. He never goes in the same spot twice, will always go either #1 or #2 in a cleaned area, will go next to the puppy pads or newspaper. Only when his friend a 3 month old Golden Retriever comes to play will he go out to do his business. i have tried all the various techniques such as clapping my hands, shaking the coin can but it still does not work. I have rewarded him when he does go out for his business and say good boy and rub him but he will only go out if he feels like it which happens very few times and far between.

There are no tell tale signs for #1 - he will be playing and will just go. For #2 he will sniff around and dothe circle thing before going - which is a great sign for me.

Please can someone help? What am I doing wrong?

Potty Training
by: Anonymous

Hi, I am proud mom of 21 months old boston girl which I love her to pieces. Potty training is a long process, so is house training. It takes quiet some time. Therefore, do not expect that your little 9 weeks old get your teaching this fast. He is only 9 wks old and it will take time only by consistency and patience from your side. So please no shaking of the can or clapping of hand or any other negative reaction. It will only work by positive reinforcement and set schedule.

The 9 wks old is too young to grasp what you are trying to communicate to him when you clap or shake a can of coin. He is too young that he even doesn't fully recognize his own name nor the meaning of "No". So please be patient and do not expect too much from this little cute creature. It took 8-9 months for my puppy to be potty trained and when she turned one yr old, she was fully trained with few accidents within the prior months.

I had created a set schedule and would put her on the pad right after I fed her or she played and etc. Please be mindful that he can only hold for 2-3 hrs therefore, you have to take her to potty every 2-3 hrs. When he goes, praise him a lot. Show lots of attention and enthusiasm. Slowly but surely, it will happen. Mainly you need to stick to your plan and do not get frustrated. Good luck.

Potty Training BT
by: Anick

Hi,

I understand your frustration. It took me a while to get my BT potty trained. Get your BT on a routine. Feed at the same time everyday half hour after take the dog out.Take him out at teh same time everyday. I always use the same words when going to do his business outside, I will continuously say Go pipi! or Go caca! and once the business is done congratulate since the BT is a dog that wants to make you proud. Always use the same door when putting outside. At some point he will go to the door on his own knowing that that door means going outside for his business. You need to be patient, it took me about 5 months before having him completly potty trained. It did help that he was crate trained also.

Hope it helps! Good luck
