Make a Pet Emergency Kit for Your Boston Terrier

Accidents happen, so it's a good idea to keep a pet emergency kit on hand. Ready-made kits are available at most pet supply stores, or you can make one yourself.

If you decide to make your own, you'll need a small plastic tub with a secure lid. Following are items you might want to include in your first aid kit.

Supplies:

  • Disposable gloves
  • Muzzle (or a roll of gauze for making a muzzle)
  • Nylon slip leash
  • Magnifying glass
  • Scissors
  • Tweezers
  • Nail clippers and metal nail file
  • Cornstarch or styptic powder/sticks
  • Eye dropper or oral syringe
  • Cotton swabs and cotton balls
  • Clean towels (paper and cloth)
  • Penlight
  • Rectal thermometer
  • Lubricant (mineral oil or KY Jelly - without spermicide)
  • Needle-nose pliers or hemostats
  • Dish soap (grease-cutting formula)
  • "Bitter Apple" or a similar product to discourage licking
  • Pet carrier/crate
  • Towel or blanket to use as a stretcher, plus another one to keep your dog warm while transporting him to the veterinarian.
  • Cold packs and heat packs (wrap them in towel before using)
  • Stethoscope

Bandages:

  • Bandage rolls (gauze and Vetwrap)
  • Non-stick pads
  • Square gauze pads in various sizes (including some sterile ones)
  • First aid tape (paper and adhesive)
  • Band-Aids (for humans)

Medications

  • Rehydrating solution (Gatorade or Pedialyte)
  • High sugar source (Karo syrup)
  • Sterile saline
  • Wound disinfectant (Betadine)
  • Triple antibiotic ointment for skin
  • Antibiotic ointment for eyes (ophthalmic)
  • Eye wash solution
  • Buffered or canine aspirin
  • Antidiarrheal medicine (Pet Pectate)
  • Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) for allergic reactions
  • Cortisone spray or cream
  • Ear cleaning solution
  • Hydrogen peroxide (to induce vomiting)
  • Activated charcoal to absorb poisons, if ingested (be sure to consult your veterinarian before use)

Also, include a note card with the following information:

  • Veterinarian office phone number and directions to the office
  • Emergency or after-hours phone number for veterinarian
  • Poison control center phone number
Be sure to check the expiration dates on medications once every few months, and replace them as needed.

You can also make or buy a smaller sized pet emergency kit to keep in the car or to take on trips when traveling with your Boston Terrier.
