Our Boston has bit me twice. Please Help.

My girlfriend and I got Leela about 3 months ago from a rescue shelter. She has been the sweetest do to us. She loves fetch, she never barks, and she just loves being around us. She has always been a little wary of other dogs due to past abuse, but she seems to get along alright with most, non-hyper dogs. I was sitting on the couch with Leela and my girlfriend last week. Leela started to sniff me very quickly sticking her nose into my chest. I put my nose on the back of her neck and mimicked the sniffing sounds. She spun around and bit my face hard enough to draw blood. I punished her immediately after with a stiff smack on the ens of the nose and a time out in her chair.

Last night, approximately a week from the last incident, I was putting Leela to bed beside my bed. I rubbed her and scratched her like I've done dozens of times before, but when I got up to get into bed, she bit my thumb. She hasn't growled before either of these incidents. She definitely sees me as the alpha male and my girlfriend never punishes her when she does something bad.

Any insight?

Boston Terrier Reacting to Back/Neck
by: Anonymous

Just thought I would add that by putting your nose on the back of her neck and sniffing it might have made her think there was another dog behind her. It's a common sign for other dogs to show dominant behavior by laying their heads on or nipping at another dogs back/neck. So her reaction was possibly instinctual of resisting another dog dominating her. In this case it was you, but until you establish strong dominance over her, those kind of signs may send her into a different state of mind without realizing it was even you.

Bitting Boston
by: Anonymous

your boston doesnt see you as the alpha dog because the rest of the pack would never dare to bit, nip, or growl at the pack leader. You need to correct all forms of nipping. pack leaders dont yell. I have found that when my Boston nips i grab her scruff like a mother dog and in a low but seriuos voice tell her NO and i dont let her go until she calms down. If she does it again when let her go grab and do a peplay. Boston can be stubborn so dont give-up. She will happier in the long run.

thanks guys
by: Anonymous

Thanks for the feedback guys. I guess I should have stated that she never growls, so I have no warning signs for the bites. She hasn't bit me or my girlfriend since, so that's good, but I want to make sure she understands that biting is not ok. She seems to nip when people go to pull away from her after petting her. Like she gets suddenly angry that the person is pulling away. Ideas?

She also seems to have alot of what looks like big zits on her hind legs. She's always chewing at them. I've booked her into the vet for a visit, but I was wondering if any of yu have noticed a similar condition with any of your Bostons. Thanks.

Be Careful when BT is upset or growling
by: Anonymous

If she was from a shelter she may have been abused before. I would try to not startle her or mimic growling until she fully trusts you.

My Boston Terrier I got when he was 8 weeks old. One day my boyfriend's mastiff walked up a my BT started growling. I lightly pushed him away and he continued so you tapped his nose. He lunged and my lip and bit hard enough that I needed stitches. That is the only time he has ever been aggressive. Be careful to touch your BT when he is growling.

biting

It is mind blowing how much your boston looks like mine. When I first got my Boston Missy She had behavioral problems one of which included biting. I would say " bad girl no bite" and put her in her kennel for a time out. They say not to spank a dog but rather a rolled up newspaper or squirt them with a squirt bottle. You may want to try that. She has improved tremendously. I adopted her too and I think whoever had her abused her. That may be why she /he does that. Good luck. You can check out Missy's picture. She has a half white face like yours.
