need help with our 1yr old boston

(Toronto)

Our boston was left in her crate all night without potty breaks from a pup up until we got her from the previous owners at 5months. We now come home from work to poop and pee in the crate everyday! We love our boston but cant handle the constand need to clean up everyday. It is not normal for dogs to want to sleep where they go to the bathroom but Pepper does this daily when we leave her to go to work. Has anyone had to deal with a similar issue? Please help.

She had to do what she had to do. That's way too long to have a baby Boston in a crate. She just got used to it, and now it's somewhat "normal" for her to go there. First of all, make sure the crate you use is only big enough for her to stand up and turn around in. If it's too big, she will easily find a corner to go in and sleep in the other end. Also, you might opt for a different scenario. Why not gate her in a small room, a bathroom for example, and cover the floor with newspaper, gradually removing the peripheral papers until she goes just on one set of papers. You can easily find instructions on paper training on the internet. This might help break the cycle; then, when you need to crate her, do it for only a short time (I would start with 15 minutes and gradually work up to a few hours, like while you go shopping.) Praise her when you take her out if the crate is dry and take her out immediately to pee. Do make sure she has had ample time to pee and poop before you put her in there to start. I'm sure others will have different suggestions you can try. Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

Can you come home during lunch, or can you hire someone to let your pup out every couple of hours? Perhaps you can move him to the Kitchen with a pee-pad. Even better...take them to work. I realize that suggestion is probably harder to accomplish but I am just throwing ideas out there for you.

Make sure the crate is small...big enough to stand and turn around but that is all...we have one of those plastic ones, not the wire ones.

Go out for potty right before you leave and immediately when you come home.

Let us know what you try and what worked out!
