My Boston is becoming destructive -- Help!

I have a 6 month old Boston mix. He has severe separation issues. He would instantly defecate in his crate as soon as we put him in it, so we got rid of it. This allowed him to play and hang out with his brother -- a kitten -- all day. For the first several months he was fine and there were no problems. However, now, he eats books or furniture or whatever he can get his teeth on as soon as my husband and I leave the room. He has ample toys of all sorts, goes outside and runs in his backyard multiple times throughout the day. He knows he is doing wrong, but he does it anyway. Any suggestions? Thank you.
