MY 1yr old Boston keeps digging holes under the fence and running away.

My 1yr old male Boston terrier keeps digging holes under my fence and runs away. He has ran away 3 times, the first 2 times we caught him just done the block of our neighborhood but this last time he was gone for more than 24hrs luckily someone kind found him and called us. We have name tags on both of our Bostons that include their names and our contact info. What can I do to correct or stop this behavior?

fencing

You might try attaching some metal chicken wire or a similar fencing material to the bottom of your current fence by digging a trough and putting this new fence material about a foot below the surface wherever possible, or filling the area, as mentioned, with rocks or bricks. Good luck.

Digging holes and running away
by: Tiffany

Try filling the holes that he digs with his own poop! Sounds yucky but I had a dog who used to do the same thing. Somebody gave me the same advice and after two or three goes he never tried it again or dug another hole! Another option is to dig a hole yourself, blow up a balloon and bury it in the hole. When they dig, it pops and gives them a fright. Good luck :-)

Invisible Fencing

I have not used invisible fencing but sometimes that works to keep the pups inside the yard. I would also put bricks or some other type of reinforcement at the bottom of your existing fence. I never let mine out of the house without my full attention. I put a bench in the back yard and sit there while they play. I can read my mail, or drink some coffee. Then when they begin to dig I hollar "NO" and they come running back. They hate to be in trouble. I live in Texas and it is usually too hot outside to be there more than 30 minutes for all of us. Then I take them for a couple of walks in the early morning and later at night when it is cool. Of course then they are on the leash. When it is colder I just keep a coat at the back door and put it on when we go out.

Keep your puppy inside more often and when you go out follow him around. Train him that digging is a no-no.

Good Luck!
