Male Boston Marking

by Chelsea
(Delaware)

My 9 month old Boston has started marking in our house. He has been "potty trained" for awhile. He is marking around my odest daughter's bed, a fake plant in the living roon, and a playhouse in my girls playroom. I did not notice any of it until I was fall cleaning and I moved theses items to get under them well. He is not neutered, but from what I am reading he will be soon. Will this really help? What do I do to get rid of the scent to him? I am returning to work in one month and we want to get another male boston so he has a friend, but i cannot bring another dog in with this issue still happening. Help me please!

Stop the Marking

There are many ways that I have read to help your male to stop wanting to mark. I think neutering helps very much. If you get another male, one or the other may want to mark again because this is a "dominance" thing to them. Our male is not neutered and he marks everytime our girls are in heat. Maybe you have a neighbor that has a female in heat (it doesn't have to be next door...it can be all the way down the street. We make sure our male is taken outside (in the backyard) the second he is let out from his crate. I sit there and watch him to make sure he "goes". Then I put him on a leash and take him out the front for a very short walk. This is when he marks the neighbors bushes (or what ever you allow him to mark). When he has no ammunition left...we bring him back inside. We watch his water intake and take him back outside every hour and watch him like a hawk. He still sneaks one every so often. That is when we break out the enzyme spray. Any brand that lists ENZYME should work. Ours works great... but you do have to know where he is marking! We also cover alot of furniture, like the chairs and the couch and we wash these coverings every week.
