loose poops

he hates the cold

he hates the cold

My husband and I recently got our first apartment sized dog and choose the BT. We couldn't be more happy with our little Percy but since about a week since we got him he's had trouble having compact poops. We've changed his food from, eukanuba to science diet, to nutro lamb and rice, and we've even done a greek yogurt and white rice diet for a day or so. but nothing has really worked well. he's been tested for worms and it came up negative. The closest we've come is purina one lamb and rice but it's still not fully solid. It's almost, for lack of a better word, snotty.
any help?

Loose Poopie

When you change a puppy's food it should only be done in stages. So first you should use what the breeder fed him. Then you put half of what he had before with what you would like to change it to. Then each day you increase the percent of new food and decrease the old.

In your case, however, it seems you have already been changing it frequently and switching to what the breeder fed him would just be another change. I would just stay with what you have now and give it a couple of weeks to settle down.

It would be good to ask what the breeder was feeding him. If the above method is what you have already done (and it was a dry kibble that you were using) then I would still give it a couple of weeks to settle down.

When puppies come home for the first time, they can be a little "upset" since they are in a new place and everything is new so they may have loose stools just because of the "stress".

There will always be the exception to the norm and that could mean that your puppy has a food allergy. But that will take some time to determine so in the meantime make sure he gets lots of water and keep asking the vet what to do. The vet has special prescription foods and some medications that help with loose stools.

Unsure if you can tripe - but I think it is the best food you can give a dog - always pickupable poos too

LOOSE BOWELS HELP
by: Anonymous

Too much yogurt will cause runny bowels. I have a boston terrier and one thing you want to avoid is giving them liver or if he has runny bowels I'd sick to only dry food. I guve my dog cheese when they get loose bowels and it helps. Good luck.

Don't forget to consider what he is getting for treats. That may be contributing to the problem. I have changed diets quite often, looking for a good poop-match, and right now they are doing very well on Iams Pro-health. I put only a very little bit of Beneful "canned" food on top because I have one fussy eater. Their poops are nicely solid; however, I have noticed that if they get rawhide... all bets are off. I would withhold all treats for at least 24 hours except for maybe very small portions of a dry biscuit. (Take a hammer and smash even the 1-1/2 inch "medium" biscuits into about 6 pieces. That would be enough for a day or more. Dogs don't understand quantity so much as they enjoy getting the treat. You might also consider very small bits of string cheese.) If the poops get more solid, then you're on the right track and it's not the food; if it stays loose, then there may be an allergy at work. I had the worst results with Science Diet. Good luck.
