line breeding

Can a female breed with her brother's son? A friend wants to breed her with the brother's son because of generation of having the white and black gene. The female is a white and black and the mother of her and the brother had 3 white and black and 1 black and white. She seems to think he is the generation to carry that and her being white and black will produce some.

Line Breeding
by: Mary

Line breeding is usually only done by those who have been breeding for a very long time. I don't line breed and here is why...
If one pup has a recessive gene he will not display this characteristic. This characteristic may be an undesirable trait. Then if you breed him with a close relative...chances are that this relative also has the recessive gene. When you put two recessive genes together they become dominate and not recessive. That means the offspring of two seemly "normal" pups may display the undesirable trait. These traits may include hereditary cataracts, bad hips/knees,... well I guess you get my point.

If you want to line breed then you should go back to the grand parents of both pups and as far back as you can go and make sure no offspring of this lot has any "undesirable traits". Be sure to check for all the usual Boston Terrier problems like blindness, deafness, luxating patella, clef lip/palate, heart disease...anything like that.

Should you breed and produce some pups it would be proper to provide the new owners with a guarantee on the puppy's health. Essentially you would promise the new owner that if the pup developed some hereditary disease that you would provide some kind of compensation. This could include refunding the purchase price, taking the puppy back and providing another, or sharing in the vet bills...this decision is up to you.

After that...if any of the new puppies did develop some very awful hereditary disease it would be wise to discontinue breeding that pair.

Good Luck and let us know how it goes.
