Itching, food-sensitive BT

Howdy--I have two, two-year-old spayed female Bostons (Nina and Abbey), and the one (Nina) has been itchy since we brought them home. She was eating Iams puppy, so we switched to a better quality dry food mixed with a little canned, and over the last two years we have been through Blue Buffalo, Innova, Wellness, Evo, California Natural--just to name a few. Then we switched to Darwin's raw foods (which they've been eating for the last six months), and they were doing okay, but the itching has never stopped.

Now, both dogs have had a bout of vomiting and the BIG-D, and they won't even look at any of the raw food flavors. I have them on brown rice mixed with a little pumpkin, and after a long discussion with the owner of the local pet food store, I bought a bag of the duck and rice dry food from the new Wellness line (Simple something or another) that I want to slowly introduce. So, I have two questions--does anyone have any dog food brand recommendations? And I'm wondering if my itchy dog is allergic to something in the house rather than something in the dog food (since she itches year round and never gets better or worse with the change of seasons). They get bathed once a week with that Itchy Dog shampoo, and brushed regularly--no dandruff, parasites, or hot spots. Any ideas? Thanks so much!

Solid Gold
by: Jared

We have four dogs, one is a Westie. When I got her she would get hot spots on her legs. I switched her to Solid Gold and it cleared quickly. I would try Solid Gold's Holistique Blendz Adult Dog (fish). This variety is a very bland well balanced diet. It is hypoallergenic and most dogs like it. My brother has a Boston who had the itchies all the time and once on Solid Gold, they cleared up. I would also supplement with Solid Gold's Sea Meal. This is an all natural supplement that focuses on overall health for your pet. It strengthens the immune system, helps lessen allergies, and lessens shedding too. Good luck with your hunt; I know it's frustrating to have a dog who seems so uncomfortable all the time.

Canidae!
by: Christine

I have four dogs. All different breeds, all different sizes. It is hard to find a dog food that they all agree on. Size of the food matters, because some of the dogs are small, some are large, not to mention their taste preference.
Long story short, thank goodness for the Nutrition link on Boston Terrier Hub.com.
That link took me to the page where dog food was rated. I looked at the highest rated food, and just went down the list. We would buy a small bag try it out on all four dogs. The winner was Canidae. I had never heard of it before, but all four dogs love it, and I can get it at the local Agway store. No itching, upset stomachs are in the past, beautiful fur coats on all of the dogs. Ollie, our Boston, looks like someone waxed his fur, it's that shinny.
Click that link on the left labeled "Nutrition" and hopefully you will find the perfect dog food for your puppy too!
Just a small footnote here, the unused bags of dog food that some of our dogs didn't like got donated to our local SPCA. They got free food, and we got a receipt for a tax write off.

Itchy and Scratchy
by: Laurel

I would say the itching is more likely environmental. you should get her allergy tested. I do know that dogs are able to take benedryl for allergic reactions but I do not know the dosage so you would have to check with the vet.
Some dogs also develop flea allergies so that maybe something you can check into.

good lucky with you little one.
