my new baby girl!!!

Hi I already have a 6 month old male boston, but today I decided to adopt a female. She is 3 years old. I went and picked her up, and you can tell the family loved her very much, but just could not afford to feed and tend to her properly. She is pretty skinny ( I can see ribs and back bone) and when i got her home she weighs 16 pounds exactly. I know some are just small, and she is short, but i do believe she is suppossed to be bigger. My male weighed 16 pounds at 5 months. Her coat is very thin, and appears to be balding behing her ears, and the coat is not as shiny as my males. The lady said they fed her gravy train, but i feed my male blue buffalo. Is there anything I can do to fatten her up a bit? She is up to date on all of her shots, rabies, and wormings. But I just would like to know if anyone has some advice as to what i can do to make her coat a little thicker, shinier, and fatten her up a little. Will the blue buffalo be enough? Or do I need more?

Proper feeding and activity of good coats
by: NancyAnonymous

I have two adult Bostons and one 4 month old Boston. My adult Boston's coats shine like glass. My female boston had a litter around Last Xmas. AT NO TIME DID HER COAT LOSE IT'S SHINE nor did she look unhealthy.

I feed them each half a can of wet food and three handfulls of dried food. (Way more for the female when she was with and nursing puppies) They are in perfect shape. I show my male in local shows.

I purchased an additional female 4 month old puppy last week. When I brought her home my son and neighbors remarked how dull and awful her coat looked. They additionally asked if she was really healthy.

It has only been a week and the baby is up to speed. I went and got dog wipes that are good for her coat and wiped her down a few times, and again fed some puppy kibble and some wet can food. She Looks like a whole different puppy and currently has a beautiful coat.

Dogs are meat and bone eaters. The canned wet stuff for the meat and the kibble for the bones.

For the record. I had only one Boston for almost 17 years. When my vet said she couldn't last more than a year(heart problem) I started to get other Bostons to on set the lost. So maybe health wise I might know what I am talking about with the feeding.

Keep them thin and active. My dogs love the local dog park. (when picky people that resent they are not fixed are not around)

Pick-me-up

There is a little "pick-me-up" secret for the BT's coat...add a little Fish Oil to the food.

You have picked a great brand (Blue Buffalo)! Try the Fish and Sweet Potato because it has the fish in it. We use that one plus we cut open a Fish Oil capsule and squeeze it over the dry food every morning.

NuVet vitamins are a great additive also.

Your little girl is very lucky!

CONGRATULATIONS on saving a little BT from a difficult situation. I'm thinking a better quality food than what she's been on will help; however, did they give you her vet file? I would definitely get her checked out, just to rule out any underlying issues. Good luck and keep us posted.

I have a female thats a year old so thought I would try to help. As far as putting weight on her it sounds like you choose a good brand just make sure she is eating it good if not you may have to shop around until you find one she likes. I would also make her food available to her at all times for awhile because females tend to eat a small amount but often. I also offer mine a snack twice a day this helps to keep her at a healthy weight, other than that just be patient as long as she is healthy it won't take long. As far as her coat, my female has a different coat than my male, his is real course and hers is shiny and soft but very thin on her chest. I would try a supplement designed to help with skin and coat and a shampoo that is moisturizing like oatmeal. I also use olive oil on my two. I rub it in their coats after their bath. Good Luck, she is gorgeous and very lucky.
