How long will my BT stay in heat?

I am worried that something might be wrong with her. She bled for about a week and was red and swollen. Now she is not bleeding or red but she is still very swollen. How can you tell that it is an actual heat? I am worried that he shampoo may have irritated her...

The first (proestrus) part of the cycle can last from 3 to 10 days and is accompanied by swelling & bleeding. The next phase (estrus/ovulation) lasts from 5 to 12 days. During this time, there can be a discharge that is light pink to straw colored. So between these two phases, she may have discharge and/or swelling for up to 22 days. She may also have behavior changes (become restless or shorter tempered than usual). If she's itching or has other signs that cause concern, consult your veterinarian.
