Has she been on heat?

by Duarte
(Portugal)

My nine month BT has not shown signs of having a season. I have bred in the past Boxers and cockers and it has been easy to identify when they were on heat. My little precious is very clean but never empties her anal glands (my monthly priveledge)and so she always is licking. I only have spayed bitches around and live in the middle of no where and so i have no male dog to give me a hint. Her vulva is big but does not seem swollen. Is it normal that she would reach this age without a season? i do not know enough about this breed. I should appreciate anyone's advise as here in Portugal the breed is very rare and although i work at a vet they too do not know the breed.
Thankyou

In Heat
by: Mary

Our first two females did not show any signs of being in heat until they were just almost 1 year old. Our vet said maybe they had a "silent" heat meaning we did not notice. The time we "noticed" boy did we notice! I do not believe they had a "silent" heat. When we did "notice" the heat, their nipples got much bigger and so did the vulva and it bled. It was not a lot of blood, but it did the usual phases, dark/thick to clear/runny. We now have a third female and she went into heat at 9 months old. So each breed is different and each dog within the breed can be different.

If your dog reaches 1 year or 1 1/2 years without a heat, then you might want to see the vet about it. Obviously some dogs show less signs than others. If you noticed that her vulva is larger, then she probably had a heat, or is close.
