Coughing can be a sign of heart disease; it's important you get your BT to a vet's for an exam.

Regarding weight loss, you can switch to a low-cal food and increase exercise time. If you already take your dog for a quick walk to complete his "errands," then try doubling your time outdoors. I don't know what your situation is, but if you can get in a 30-minute walk every day, it will help. At least do it several times a week.

Also, take the small biscuits and break them into at least 3 pieces (break off the two ends from the middle; I often break them apart again or purchase the little gumdrop shaped biscuits from the pet store or little mini-biscuits for toy breeds.) They are not usually eating from hunger but for pleasure, and having a little treat is just as satisfying to them.

Good luck.
