Gidget - Boshih

Gidget is a rescue dog. She is a Boshih. Very playful and friendly. She is one year old, July 25th. I am not around her all day long, but my 85 year old mother is. My mother loves her and spoils her rotten. I am having problems trying to teach her not to jump on people when they come to visit and bitting me, just in play. Any suggestions?

She is a beautiful dog, does not like her hair brushed at all, doesn't mind a bath, but sure likes to play in the mud and snow. I wouldn't trade her for anything. Mary Gallatin, Jefferson City, Mo.

Hello,
Congrats on Gidget. I have a BoShih named Captain(aka Cappy) who will be 9 mo. 1/14/09. He has every quality you mentioned re: Gidget. He also loves to swim and play in the river behind our house. We have battled Captain jumping on people and play nipping (which easily leads to adult biting). Walking him for at least a 1/2 hour daily really helps him to not challenge us so much. During these walks insist with a short quick snap of the collar that Gidget does not pull or lead you. If necessary purchase a lite chain collar from a pet store where you can be shown how to safely and humanely use it. This will not hurt Gidget if used properly and she will soon be a joy to walk. Every so often have her stop and sit calmly before you move on.

Always keep your head and shoulders up and look forward, not back at Gidget. She will soon learn to respect you as her leader and will be 100x's easier to teach no nipping or jumping. Possibly, you could take turns with your mother if she is up to it, she could break the walks up into a few shorter walks a day.

Captain loves to walk and struts along in a jaunty little trot as if he is king of the world. He will play fetch till he drops but there is something about walking him on leash, he is completely responsive and respectful for the rest of the day. I think he has a strong alpha type personality and the walking establishes me as the leader. His personality is very terrier like. He likes to dig and loves to bury his favorite treats and chews. He will place them in the corner or a room and find a sock, shirt, etc.... and cover it up. But unlike most terriers he loves other dogs and people...especially kids. We absolutely love him to death. Good luck with Gidget.
