Getting discouraged about getting a Boston...opinions?

Hello everyone! This site has been a great resource about Boston's for my wife and I. Thank you! I'll try to make this short! We are moving to a new home in a few months, and we have wanted a dog for a long time, but always had apartments. After reading many posts on this website, I'm worried that a Boston may not be a dog to get. We have researched so many dogs and came up with the Boston, so its discouraging. We also want to rescue one, so they will be at least a year and a half old. We both work, so the dog will be at home alone for 8 to 9 hours except on the weekends. We will be able to have someone come to the house during the day to help them adjust, but not forever. We could either crate them or they will also have access to a doggie door at other times. we would also like to be able to have them sleep in our room on a dog bed or in a crate, but not on the bed. It seems like this is tough to get a Boston to do? Would they be able to adapt to the work day schedule? Any input would be great. Thanks again.

Bostons in general

I agree with Mary's assessment of your situation. Getting a rescue will be your safest bet. Our Bostons will sleep in their crates in our bedroom, but they certainly prefer being under the covers with us. They can go 8-9 hours between potty trips when they are adults. See what you can work out with a rescue organization; they will have assessed the dogs and know what works and what doesn't with each one. Good luck. Also, a 20-30 minute brisk walk each day is more than sufficient. During the winter in Maine, my dogs often don't get that much because it's just too darn cold!

We have 3 bostons. One will not sleep in her crate, one will but you need to coax him, and the other one LOVES her crate and stands by it when she feels sleepy and wants in. So the trick is to find one that will sleep in her crate. If she is a rescue then chances are they will be used to a crate but make sure that is true. Ours stay in their crate while we are at work (6am to 3pm) or so and they have been fine. We let them out as soon as we get home and they go potty. Then they go for a walk in the neighborhood and get to eat. They don't need as much exercise as a bigger dog so they seem great for apartments.

The great thing about a rescue is that you can get to know them BEFORE you take them home, so just take your time and find one that works for you. It may take a year to find that perfect one but if you are careful then you and another Boston will be very very happy!

WE LOVE OUR BOSTONS!
