Funny smell from my boston's rear end

by Tessa

I got a 18 months old sweet boston girl. She is so healthy and in good shape. Recently though I have noticed a funny (perhaps skunk like smell) from her rear end. I know about the possibility of anal sac inflammation but she does not have any signs related to it. The only noticable sign is the funny unpleasant smell from her rear end. She doesnt roll in something in the yard nor been unbathed. She gets regular baths and this smell seem to have been developed recently. Does anyone have experienced anything similar or has anyone had problem with anal sacs in their bostons? thanks.

yeast infection
by: Anonymous

Our boston started to scoot, had a funny smell. We thought anal glands too..turned out it was a yeast infection under her tail/stub. Her tail lies very close to the body, doesn't protrude at all. Vet gave us medicated powder and wipes.

anal glands...
by: Traci

I get my female BT's anal glands drained @ the vet every month to 5 weeks without fail. My vet, who is wonderful, says that the BT's anal glands are located unusually far Up inside their anus, and the skin, which makes up the sacs, is exceptionally tough. These two factors therefore, make dispelling the contents all by themselves, when they are full, almost impossible, therefore having a vet do it is very important. Take your BT in to get them drained by a vet and never leave it to them to do. Good Luck!

May want to express the glands
by: Anonymous

All dogs tend to have this issue after a while - some sooner than others. I've heard from other dog owners that they will just express their dog's anal glands. If you want to do it yourself, go for it, but I do believe places like Petco that have the vet/groomer locations within the store offer the service for a reasonable price (considering it is not a very pleasant task). Our boston is a bit over a year old and we are not at the point where he needs one (yet) but when the time comes, I will be paying someone else the $10-20 to do it!

Same problem
by: Anonymous

I have a boston/pit mix and he has had the same problems. The vet said its a problem releasing the anal sacs which should occur when they drop a duece. If the poop isn't solid as it exits sometimes the sacs don't release. So just make sure the diet or food is one that is making the stool nice and solid.
