Boston Terriers are a highly desirable breed, in many places uncommon and expensive to acquire. By all means, let your Boston run free. If it survives, someone will find it and give it a proper home ... maybe. ...

I would recommend a fenced in yard. However, I have complete and total trust in mine after years of training. choosing not to have a fence could one day prove fatal, but if you and your boston have the amount of trust in each other and you know without a shadow of a doubt he or she will not run, i would go with a fence.

BT's are terriers; specifically, they were bred as "ratters" and their "job" was to rid Boston of vermin. With that said, they will chase every squirrel, chipmunk, cat, etc., that will cross your yard. They will chase leaves on the off chance it might be a chipmunk in hiding. They will chase them into the street, which is how we lost our Bogie at 5:30 a.m. on a country road...
A fenced yard isn't required, but a leash is. Please learn from our mistake. Bogie always stayed with us in the yard... until the day he didn't and chased a squirrel, who by the way survived.
