Isavella 2 Birthday
by: carmennavedo/Isavella

Hello, here again - it's been a while. Isavella is celebrating her birthday tomorrow. She is changing in her behavior a lot. She is more attached to me, she always has a toy in her mouth like a hunter dog, she drive me crazy with that behavior, but I am learning to live with that. Still she doesn't want to be alone. She is very protective and controlling but I love her to death. She is changing like a teenager, love to see her growing old with me. Will celebrate with cookies and new toy, let you know how long will last, like always kisses and love .....ISAVELLA

by: Darla's Mom

I want to thank you for your encouragement. I am just getting the hang of this website, so it took me a while to see your comment. This is our first BT and we want to do everything right. I am glad that this is a place that I can communicate with other BT owners. Darla is our daughter and has worked her way into our hearts for sure.
Thank you again for your info.

you need to be the alpha dog
by: Linda Galway/TurnerME

Hi, Carmen,
Well, a lot of people don't like this procedure, and there's controversy about it, but it can work with dogs who are truly the "alpha" male (Sometimes it's a female, I have one.)
You may have to establish yourself as the dominant one in your relationship, and since you can't explain it to Isavella, you will have to show her. Essentially, when she begins to get out of control, you carefully flip her onto her back (maybe on the couch or a rug) hold her front paws up by her head so she can't bite you, talk slowly and sternly to her, in a low voice, and tell her "Shame! NO BITE!" Until she stops and relaxes,(praise her then) you have to keep her in the position. She just needs to understand you mean "no" when you say it, and physical punishment should be avoided. To take something out of her mouth, put your hand OVER her muzzle, squeeze in a little so her mouth opens and take the item away. Use the term "GIVE." Then PRAISE her for giving it to you, even if she didn't want to! Maybe a treat after. Since everything you've tried hasn't worked, these strategies might.

She doesn't want to be alone
by: carmen Isavella

Isavella is behaving very strangely. Every time we go out she starts running around the house getting all her toys and gets very upset when she see me getting dressed, I put the TV or the radio on. It's like she can't breathe. What is going on? Is this a normal behavior with a BT? Can someone help with some advice? I am getting worried. Thank you, carmen.

Thank you note to Linda Galway
by: carmen/Isavella

Linda, this is Carmen (Isavella's mom). Just want to say thank you so much for the good advice. As a new BT owner I am just a little afraid to say something to her. After losing my kristy and getting vella, I am putting in much effort to do everything right. She is one year old she is going to start her classes in jan. I was very sick - now is time to correct this behavior. She is doing much better but still hasn't stop the nipping yet,. I really appreciate all the inf. given. I hope to keep in touch with you. Bless your BT. thank you, carmen

Part of this is just being a puppy; however, you cannot allow it to continue unchecked. Hitting your dog is not acceptable, but you should be able to speak to your pup in a stern voice with "No bite!" As soon as she stops, then praise with "Good Girl, Good no bite." You must try to catch your dog being good, even when she doesn't intend to be, and then praise that behavior. You should probably look for a dog obedience class through local adult education or your local shelter. There you can get your specific issues addressed. I have a photo of one of my BTs surrounded by the inside of a pillow, strewn for 20 feet. They do, mostly, outgrow that, but I still take no chances and pick up any "soft, plush" items and store them in high places.
