What's Your Dog Food Rating?

As of June 2010, we will no longer be updating the dog food rating page and have removed outdated ratings. There are just so many foods to keep up with, and manufacturers frequently "re-formulate" their foods that we are unable to keep up with that along with all the Boston Terrier specific things here on the site.

For a very general idea on the quality of your commercial food, you can use these guidelines to help determine the quality of your food.

Another great resource is Petsumer Report. It is a subscription service, and their sole focus is staying on top of ratings, reformulations and recalls. The site also has some very interesting information about the commercial pet food industry. Every review includes:

  • A list of quality meat proteins.
  • A list of any special health promoting ingredients.
  • A notation if the food contains any controversial ingredients.
  • A notation if the food contains any by-products, chemical preservatives, and/or animal fat.
  • Notations if the food contains good things probiotics and chelated or proteinated minerals.
  • Pet Food Company information, including who and where the food is manufactured, plus any special safety/quality control certifications.
  • History of pet food recall information, with a link to the FDA's recall page.
You can see a report example and learn more at www.petsumerreports.com.

From time to time, manufacturers change their formulas. So, be sure to check the ingredients on your favorite brand from time to time to make sure there haven't been any changes. And especially, be sure to research before transitioning your dog to a new food.
