Hey Mom, come back in its hot out there.

Hey Mom, come back in its hot out there.

Hello All,
I am new to the Boston world, and its so awesome. We got Digger two weeks ago, and so far everything is going great. He has learned to like his crate, he is almost sitting on command, and he is just now 11 weeks old. So smart......However, I have read that Bostons are hard to housetrain, and boy is it right. It doesnt matter how many times a day he gets to go out (I am a stay at home mom and he gets let out very frequently), nor how much I limit his water intake(dont worry, he still drinks plenty LOL), he still pees in the house. I am always watching him when he is out playing, and always goes back in the crate if I am to busy to watch him. Its very frustrating as my husband is very anal about dogs in the house anyway. He is making an exception for my new baby. Digger is my first Boston, and all the other puppies I have housetrained in my lifetime(all schnauzers) were a walk in the park compared to Digger. LOL Still gotta love the big goof ball! I am just going to continue to use my methods of housetraining and I am sure Digger will get it soon enough.

Thanks a Million

Peeing in the House

Yes, Bostons can be .... stubborn. That's what I call it. They know better, but they just do it anyway. I have noticed that it gets so much better as they age. If he is neutered, it is also better. By two years of age, it should be under good control. USE TREATS!

Yes she does.

I have two. One is a pure boston and she does when ever she knows she's done something wrong. We call it being spiteful.

Digger

I think, in general, you will find Bostons a little harder to housetrain than, say, a Lab or Shepherd. When I took my dogs to obedience class, the trainer said it's unlikely to be able to fully train a puppy until they are at least 12 weeks old and can control their bladder muscles for longer periods of time. Don't get frustrated; don't get angry. Just be consistent about praising Digger when he gets it right.

Our Darby was fully trained by 5-6 months for pooping (there's more lead time) and by 7-8 months for peeing. We rescued Scarlett at a little over a year, and she had accidents (2 or 3) but our consistency made the difference, and she goes to the door now. If Digger likes games, teach him to ring a bell at the door to let you know he needs to go out. Our first Boston did that and picked up on it very quickly Darby is afraid of the bell, so he just stands patiently at the door until we notice he's not in the room with us... Good luck.
