Licking and Allergies
by: Kristine

My boston is 7 years old and she developed allergies in the past couple years. She licks her front paws until they are red and inflammed. After several vet visits and changing her food, I have found an awesome combo that works like a charm! She is on 1/2 of a Zyrtec allergy pill every day and ONLY eats Prescription Diet z/d dry and wet food. Anyone having the same problems(allergies and licking) with their Boston, ask your vet.

Scratch and Lick
by: Mama Boston Terrier

We just got an 18 month old BT. She was not licking and scratching for the first 3 days after we brought her home. During that time I have tried to switch dog food. She was on something called "farm" from Blue Seal Foods. I thought it was a low grade food because she was real skinny when we got her and she was refusing to eat it so I figured she was starving to death (hence her ribs showing). I have tried Purina, Science Hill and Taste of Wild. She loves them all but have they caused the itching and licking her hind feet? Any thoughts? How do I know what to feed her, she seems starved all the time?

My beautiful baby boy is 3 yrs old and licks absolutely anything from your feet to the lounge. I never really thought of it as a problem cause his mother licks twice as much as he does and his daughter,(1 yr old) who is also my baby licks less then her father. I always thought it was an inherited trait. If they are not licking anything that can harm them or there skin is not affected then i would not worry about it.

nervous licking

Mine only licks when she is nervous about something. What you can do is just tell them to stop it. :)

Our 10 month old licks
by: Anonymous

Our 10 month old licks all the time. We just put it off as part of his breathing problem. He has a small nostril on one side and will need an operation to open it up. So we just think its a way for him to smell everything and remember who you are.

Licky, Licky, Licky!

Our Boston Tish was 3 when we got her, and she had so much saliva when she got excited. We finally got her calmed down a little, and she does have allergies. Now she licks a lot! She licked herself, but when the vet put her on steroids/antihistamine pills it helps, but she gained weight. We changed her food, making sure there is no wheat in it, but flaxseed is good and fish oil. We give her 3V and are going to add some Pet tabs. We bathed her in an oatmeal shampoo/conditioner, which seemed to help a little. Now we stop her when she licks herself.

The weirdest thing is her licking my husband's bald head. I don't especially want her to lick me, especially my hands. When I put lotion on my legs after a shower, she comes to lick. The vet this year seemed to think she might be allergic to pollen since we came in May to vet both last year and this year. We live in the south and have pinestraw for mulch, which might also irritate her. She is a smart dog and so beautiful and more fun than any pet I ever had! Before we got her, she was shown and is very well trained. She walks beside the motorized scooter my husband has because of trouble walking and is so obedient. She gets frustrated when she cannot catch a squirrel she stands on her hind legs and bites the bark of the tree! My daughter has 2 chihuahuas and she plays with one of them....runs all over the house...she's really fast! They are good friends, and she loves for him to visit.

licky Boston
by: Holly

My 8mo Boston licks everything. He started doing that about 6 mo old. I just think its part of the way he learns about his enviroment or if he wants attention. He will like our pant leg while we sit on the couch or lick the carpet or lick glass doorwall or lick his toys. We think it is weird, and are trying to teach him about what he can lick. So far, he is still licking. Let me know if you figure out how to get them to stop. :)

Licky Boston

I have two boston's and one of them is crazy about licking. I think that one of them does have allergies but the other one just kisses you all day. Riley I believe has allergies and he licks his paws and feet. They do clean (lick) themselves before they lay down for bed. It is a ritual before bedtime.

You might want to explore the possiblity of alergies, I have read that this can be a sign of alergies.
