I can speak only from my experience. I've had three Bostons -- two boys and a girl. The first boy was an alpha dog but also had a loving disposition and got along well with other dogs but was never concerned with how big the other dog was at all. My second boy is more shy, very loving and somewhat silly; he's definitely not an alpha dog; he lives with our female, same age. She is very bossy and also very loving. She will snatch a toy out of his mouth, and he lets her. They snuggle together for naps. You probably will find as many variations on these temperaments as there are Bostons. In general, I wouldn't let gender determine which pup I get from a litter. I'm very interested to hear what others have to say about the boy/girl variations.

You can get a rowdy female and a laid-back male or vice versa. It really depends on both the stud and the momma and environmental factors. That's why rescues of adult dogs are so popular. You can see the personality right away and there is no need to guess. We have a true lap-dog female. She is very docile. Then we have a very playful male. He will sit in your lap after a good game of tug-o-war. Then there is Bridgette. She was way more active than our male and much less "loving". But now that she is getting older she will sit in your lap after a good run around the block. None of our dogs are related but I understand even within the same litter you will find different personalities.

I guess the main difference between males and females is their potential to have a litter. Hee hee. But if you get them spayed/neutered then the differences are less evident.
