Devastated Boston Owner

I just realized that my one year old boston female is pregnant! I noticed that she had gained a little weight but today I noticed that she had udders like a cow and when I gently squeezed at one of her nipples milk came out. She had her heat somewhere around the beginning of April and it lasted at least 3 weeks. I am at a loss right now. I don't know how this happened. I don't know when she is due. The only possible father is the neighbors dog. He is also only a year old or younger. He is a mix breed. The neighbor claims he is a YorkiePoo.

I'm guessing she is due any day now. I have no idea what to expect and know nothing about breeding. Any info is appreciated. I'll be honest about this. I'm mad, sad, and scared and don't know what to do. I am taking her to the vet tomorrow. I also have a boxer. Should I keep her away from mom and pups once they are born? I have so many questions and concerns. Please HELP!

new pups

Some bostons need to have their babies delivered by C section because of the size of the puppies heads. I would talk to your vet about that as well. Also they usually only carry about four at a time so you will not have that many to worry about. I hope all goes well and the puppies get adopted quickly. So I guess you could call your mixed puppies Yokie Poostons.
Good luck

Mary, what a nice job you did explaining all of that process.

New Pups

So you will soon be a new mommie. It won't be that bad. No sense in reprimanding you about a female in heat, right? Lesson learned. On to taking care of her.

Our female's heat began April 2nd and she "tied" April 9th - 14th. (A planned litter) She just delivered on June 10th.

So yes, it sounds like your baby will deliver any day now. If you just noticed the swelling then she may be able to go to the vet for x-rays. That should tell you how many pups and about what day they may be born. Oh, a car ride may induce delivery so you may want to put down an old sheet or blanket in the back seat!

Don't fret now...it's time to do some really quick learning. Here is a website about whelping...

http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/whelping.htm

There is much more information out there so do some more research if you have the time.

Also, if you do not want to be a breeder then it is much easier to have your baby spayed than it is to keep her put up while she is in heat. But if you wanted to breed her eventually, then now you will have the experience.

You will have some mixed-breed Bostons for sale soon. Be sure to read about how to find good homes for your puppies.

Now...about what will happen next...Your baby will start to do some "different" things like hiding, panting, following you around like...OK THAT one might not be so different but you get what I mean. Also, be taking her temperature twice a day and logging that in a notebook. When the temperature drops (ours dropped from 100.2-99.5 down to 98.2-97.5)then she should be delivering VERY soon (like about 12 hours or less). You definitely need to be there in case you think you need to go to the vet. You need a whelping box and lots of towels or blankets. I needed a heating pad and we live in Texas AND it's summer. Read Read Read because there are a lot of things you will need to do and know.

If all else fails and you feel like you need to GO TO THE VET. It's ok to go even if YOU are uncomfortable.

Good Luck! And Please write us back and tell us your experience.
