Demodex Mange Treatment - Promeris

Our breeder called us and told us that the litter mates of our new Boston had developed a case of Demodex Mange. We took our baby to the vet and we saw small patched of hair loss, but it was localized and not generalized. Our breeder told us she used Promeris, by Wyeth (now Pfizer Animal Health) which is similar to Frontline, but it also kills the Demodex mites as well as the ticks that cause lyme disease, etc. Our vet had not heard of it and we were able to buy it online even though Pfizer will not sell unless you are a vet. It has worked like a miracle, the hair loss spots cleared up and her coat is shiny and full. Has anyone else heard of using Promeris for Demodex Mange?

I have a 8 yr old boston female that has really had no health problems until this spring. We thought we were going to lose her several times in May, she wouldn't eat or drink then broke out with these bumps that turned into blisters that broke and dried. Then when the scab fell off it took the hair with it. Took her to the vet, they had never seen anything like it. Put her on antibiotics, stopped any treats, she got better then got worse again. Took her back to the vet, put her on a low dose antibiotic and acidophilus helped tremendously, she started eating and actually got playful again. Almost healed completely up and now is all broke out again. She is licking constantly, itching constantly, driving herself crazy as well as us!

A friend of ours works at the vet clinic and found this website yesterday so I am on here reading and reading, sounds like I need to get either the frontline or some of the other stuff. I changed her food to duck, sweet potato, no grains, etc. Any comments would be gladly heard. Thanks!

My Boston had the same thing and the Vet prescribed Proneris also. First time I put it on him, the smell was so strong that I had to keep the windows open for half a day. After that, I would apply on him right before we go hiking and it helped with the smell. After a few months,, I either got used to it or they made them less strong I didn't mind the smell. It worked as prescribed and I went back to frontline after I ran out and the mange cane back. He was on it for over a year and it went away. Now I don't use anything but I do bathe him with flea shampoo every week.

This can be a tricky question because Mange is caused by the mites but an "outbreak" is actually more complicated than that. Most puppies have an immune system that can handle the mites without the hair loss & everything that is associated with them. If a pup has a bad outbreak it is usually because their immune system is weaker than most.

So if your pup had a light case (as it sounds that he did) then just clearing up the mites is fine. However, if there is a pup with a worse case then he really would need some immune boosting care. This could be vitamins, extra nutrition, or whatever you and your vet decide.

While puppies are nursing they have their mother's antibodies, then right as they begin to be weaned, they have to rely on their own immune systems. This is the time when their system is the least developed, so those with the weaker systems may have an "outbreak". As the puppy ages his immune system usually strengthens and he should have no more problems.

There is some information over the internet concerning this problem that can give you more details. It will be a good idea to read about it so that you can better understand what is going on and what to look for in the future with your puppy.

NuVet puts out a wonderful mulitple vitamin. You can also google "Immune Dog" and see what supplements come up.

I have heard of using different flea and even heart-worm prevention to help with Mange. But remember, that just kills the mites and does not help with any lowered immune systems.
