Dairy for Boston Terriers?

Hello, we have just adopted a 9 month old male Boston Terrier. He is great! He's a little big for a BT...weighing in at 27lbs. He's 18" long and when he sits, the top of his head is about 20" from the floor.

We just took him to his first vet appointment here in New York City and the doctor suggested something very interesting for Spencer's diet. He said a dry/wet mix is good for his first meal. But his second meal of the day should be dairy, like cottage cheese or yogurt. When I heard this I thought it was crazy, but the doctor has been treating the breed for 40 years...he's like 80!

I would just like to hear what others think about this. I trust this doctor and I know that he would not suggest something harmful. He has four Bostons of his own and they have the same diet. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Dairy for dogs?
by: Kathleen

Most dairy is a good source of nutrition - protein, calcium, vitamin D and more.

However, some adult dogs don't produce enough of the enzyme lactase. Lactase is the enzyme that breaks down the lactose in dairy products. When the lactose can't be broken down, diarrhea may result. This is the same issue in humans who are lactose-intolerant.

I would say that if your vet has advised you to use this diet, I'd give it a try. Especially since he's been feeding his own BTs that way. If your dog has an adverse reaction, you can ask for alternatives from your vet (lactose-free dairy products are available, too).

whats with dairy?

I'm curious about this dairy business too... I always thought that dairy was bad for dogs, but have heard more than one person recently suggest dairy foods for a part of a dogs diet. Please advise!

Cottage Cheese & Yogurt
by: Dennis

Your Vet is right on about Cottage Cheese and Yogurt!!!!!

Also, avoid using Purina One Light. We did for six months with our two Bostons and the food lacks Omega 3 & 6. They started to shed a lot more than normal. After taking them off it and using Puina One Adult Lamb & rice, the shedding has dimished a lot.
