How long can I leave a trained BT alone during the day?

We are thinking about getting a BT right before summer and housebreaking it, training it, etc. But when school and work starts up, no one will be home for about eight hours during the day.
We have heard that BT's don't like being left home alone for long periods of time. Do you have any advice for us, or will this just not work?

Crating while at work??

How long can Bostons be crated for? Both my girlfriend and I work 7-5 and have had the luxury of a family friend stopping by to walk our Boston during the day. Our friend can no longer do this and we can't afford a real dog walker at $15-20/ day. thank you!
