Congenital cataracts

We just go an 8 week old Boston Terrier pup. We just got home from our vet who Dxed her with congenital cataracts. We (wife, children and I) are devistated. We have a second apointment with the pet store vet for the morning. Google seems to be turning up conflicting information. Does anyone have any words of advice? How devistating are congenital cataracts in a Boston Terrier?

How is your puppy doing? We bought a puppy that also had congenital cataracts and was pretty much blind by the time she was a year old. I can understand you being devastated but it is going to be harder on you than the puppy. They can adapt very well to the lack of vision and live a very full life. You just need to help them. Our Lady lived to be 13 years old having no problems with her eyes until she damaged one running into a coffee table when she was around 8. Our fault, we should have removed the object. Lady played fetch, we took her for regular walks and she would swim in the lake with us. Obviously under supervision. You'll just have to watch how the vision declines and adapt for her. Put pillows and pads around the house on corners and sharp objects that cannot be moved. Don't leave shoes and stuff lying around for her to trip over. You won't be able to move you furniture around so she will know where everything is at. They learn their way around well and can still have a wonderful life. You just have to look out for them and be aware of potential dangers. Is she a pet store puppy? You mentioned the pet store vet. Hopefully you have an independent Vet to go to also. Good luck!
