Concerns about surgery for Luxated Patella

I have a BT who is 3.5 years old. Every since he was a puppy, his left hind knee would pop out of joint occassionally, but he would always pop it back in. During his last annual check-up, the vet told us that he has Grade III luxated patellar. I was shocked as our dog shows no pain and doesn't limp or favor it. We made an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon who told us this is not a surgery that we absolutely have to do right away, but the longer we weight, the more severe his arthritis wil get - which is irreversable.

I am in a very difficult position. Do I get the surgery done now or do I wait until his position gets more severe?

Has anyone else gone through this type of surgery? What was your experience pre, during, post surgery. Did your BT fully recover?
