Coke is what i call her for short. Coke is a very Friendly dog when it comes to people. She loves belly rubs and boy does she give lot of kissess. The only problem is I can't seem to get her potty trained and she chews on everything. I noticed this morning that her eyes were really watery and she's sluggish. I need help puppies are new to me.

I think Coke is pregnant

I'm not sure, but I think I'm going to be a grand mother. I'm not sure how I could tell if she is or not.

training / allergies
by: Anonymous

Maybe she has allergies. My bo-chi gets a little red eyed a few times per year, and will snort like a little french bulldog. ask your vet.

when i adopted mine he was four and the pound said he wasn't housetrained. i had him sleep in a nice plastic dog crate (the right size for his 17 pounds). when we would leave the house he would go in the crate. He was housetrained within a week, because he refused to pee in his crate (all dogs should, naturally, refuse to pee in their crate as long as you let them out often - see a vet if they do). the key is to not leave them alone out and about the house for the whole week, and to let them out a lot. this way they don't have a chance to pee in the house. the two times mine did i gave him a brief scolding as i caught him in the act.

the only time he's ever gone in the house since we got him and potty trained him is if he is sick and has diahrea. amazingly, when this happens (it's happened maybe three times) he goes into the bathroom and does it next to the toilet on the tile floor. pretty funny. i guess he figures if the rest of his pack does it, he can too. a gain, only does it when he has diarhea and we weren't home.

anyway, stick with housetraining. if they are having accidents, i hate to tell you that it's a training issue not a dog issue. you need to take them out constantly until they get the hint. mine will wait 12 hours without a complaint (though this happens rarely rarely rarely). 8 - 10 hours is common for him and he's in no rush to pee when i take him out.

Co-Co

Congratulations on your new puppy!
It's great that you watch her so closely and are concerned with her health. Sometimes puppies' eyes water for no particular reason and sometimes there could be something wrong. Your best move would be to find a good vet that you can rely on and that has a more cautious approach. You can call around and just chat with some that are close to you and ask them what their methods are for puppies and dogs. They will be honest with you and let you know what they do. Then you can decide which one you like better.

You don't have to run to the vet every time you think something might be wrong but they can take samples and look under the microscope or test for things like mites, worms, allergies and all kinds of things.

So you should get a book or video (or internet site) where you can learn about puppy care and when to take your puppy to the vet and when you just need to keep a close eye on him. You can always just call your vet and ask him what he thinks.

This is a great site too. You can ask people who own dogs what their experience was.

As for me... my dog's eyes seem to always water. Our vet said that they have some little hairs that sometimes stick into their eye. He said if it got bad that he would cut that hair...but it hasn't gotten that bad yet. If our dogs get sluggish...we watch to see if they are eating, sleeping, and playing the same way they always do. If they are not eating or drinking or if they have diarrhea then we go to the vet.
