cici's in heat

I have a female boston terrier that is in heat again. I had her breed last summer and she gave birth to 4 puppies. She was breed twice one time per day for two days. I now have my own male and wanted to know if it was a problem to keep them together for the entire time she is in heat. I was told that she could have puppies that were a week younger than the others if I did this and that they could be underdeveloped when she gave birth. Is this true?

Thank you for your input. I am new to this and did not know that I needed to breed everyother cycle. Now I know, and will keep them apart the next time she comes in heat. Thanks again.

Now that you have your own male you will want to make sure that he is not too aggressive. The female will not let him tie if she is not ready and he will usually take no for an answer. Just watch them for a while and make sure he "behaves". If you think she may be too submissive you can separate them. We do that by putting me in charge of the female and my husband in charge of the male. She goes with me and He goes with him. We keep them in separate crates and separate rooms. I must say that our male would wear himself out if he could...so we let them tie about 3 or 4 times then separate them. Each tie is about 2 days apart. After day 3 or 4 my female will not allow the male to tie and he looses interest. I imagine that the odor tells him what he needs to know. When we think they are "finished" we put them together and watch them very closely. When he quits trying to mount then we know it is safe to have them together again.

One more thing...I have read that you should only breed every OTHER cycle. That means about 3 to 4 weeks of a very intense time of keeping them apart. That's when we don't even let them see each other. But our male will still "catch a scent" and wine and wine at her door. We always make sure that there are two closed doors between them. There is a door to the room and a door to the hall. She has to stay in the company room when she is in heat on the cycle we do not want to breed her in. Also, our male has learned that when we say "NO" we mean it. Just don't turn your back on them for a second....
