Chewing on EVERYTHING!

Chewing on EVERYTHING! I have a 9 month boston terrier. I have another small dog and they are both doggie door trained. Everytime I leave the house I come home to chaos. She's eaten dvds that she pulled off the shelf, pictures that she chewed out of frames, she has even chewed on the wall. I have tried ignoring it, tried punishing her for it, tried crating her (but she's so used to the doggie door that she isn't doing well with this, and sometimes I work 12 hour days, which is why I doggie door trained her). ANY advice on how to stop the chewing, or something to spray on my belongings, or anything will greatly be appreciated!

When I got my first Boston I was working 12 hours a day and probably gone more like 14 hrs. My husband was home with him until noon so he was only alone about 6 to8 hours a day and that was enough. I would come home to everything chewed up until I realized he needed something to relieve his stress of being alone. We now have our second Boston which I am home with everyday and there has been a world of difference in the two puppies. Also, remember every dog is different some Bostons are just
more high strung than others. My oldest one still hates to be left alone but at least he is destructive to his own belongings and not ours.
Big stress reliever for our Boston has been the large ropes its his security he can chew them, shake them, and also stuffless animals.

What 1st came to mind was a product called Nyla Bones. Our Bostons are 6 mo. old and these work very well at calming them down and focusing on chewing just the "bone". They stay content for as long as we allow them to chew. The second thing that came to mind once I finished reading your post is maybe you could invest in a dog walker or sitter. 12 hrs. is an aweful long time to be away from your animals and for them to be alone without you. No wonder your coming home to so much chaos. Your babies have missed you and didn't have you there to show them the attention and love they obviously are needing from you. If someone could come in maybe to walk them and let them use some of their energy during exercise they would want to nap more instead of act out! Good Luck.

My Darby was and is a chewer. The best method we've found is to "puppy proof" an area and keep him confined. That could be a bathroom or the kitchen, if you don't have an open floor plan. You can spray your walls/cupboards/cabinets with Bitter Apple or apply their ointment option. Within that area, provide durable chew toys, rope, hard plastic, etc. Also, we have to remove any floor rugs because he would get hold of a yarn loop and make mincemeat of the rugs. I've come home to a kitchen filled with stuffing from a bed we tried (better to put down a bath towel you don't care about) putting in the kitchen. Now that he's over 2, it's has subsided considerably, but I still don't trust him. He'll go after tags, so cut those off anything! If I think of more, I'll add it later. Good luck.
