Caring for a One eyed Boston Terrier

by Amy
(Lawrenceburg Indiana)

My three year old boston terrier was involved in a dog fight today and his right eye popped out. He now has to have it removed via surgery in the morning. We are very worried about something happening to his other eye now and how to care for a dog that has only one eye. Can anyone give advice? We are still in a bit of shock and this dog is our furry child so we are very sad too.

My 11 month old Boston terrier had her eye bit by our bigger dog at feeding time. They say she's blind. Tomorrow I will find out if they can keep the eye for cosmetic purposes or just remove it all together. Our family is heartbroken that this happened to her. I am scared that if I keep both dogs this will happen again. I wish I could hold her now but she's at the hospital.

Marley lost her right eye
by: Michele

Marley is 15 1/2 years old. She had cataract surgery in December because she was rather blind. However, she develope glaucoma as a complication from the cataract surgery. We had to administer about 20 eyedrops a day for months. Then all of a sudden her right eye got a corneal ulcer. We had another surgery and she got even more eyedrops. After 3 weeks, the eye ruptured. It had to be removed. Now, she runs, jumps and plays like a puppy. She feels so much better now. We always take her outside if it's dusk or dark, but other than a little depth perception issue, she's a ton better that she was even back in November before any of the surgerys. All she needs is a little care, a little assistance in the dark and a lot of love!

One eyed Boston

Hey Amy, I'm in the same boat with you. Our 6 month old Ruby was bitten by one of our bigger outside dogs last Tues morning and her eyeball fell out. All this happened at 3 in the morning. I had got up to use the restroom and let her and the poodle out to potty. I heard her cry so I ran outside and there she was. I brought her in and pushed her eye back in the socket. I started calling our vet. She laid down and seemed to be fine. It was really red and started to swell. The vet called around 6 so I took her in. He put her to sleep and sewed her eyelid up. She was on antibiotics and pain meds for a week. She didnt act like it bothered her at all. I took her back yesterday and they took the stitches out. She's definitely blind in that eye. Now we're just waiting to see if she's gonna lose her eye. I'm putting ointment in every few hours and she's on another round of antibiotics. I feel so bad but it hasnt slowed her down at all. She's still a crazy little puppy. and she seems to be making tears in that eye so at least it's not drying out. I want to know what they did for your baby. jlangley_1980@yahoo.com

So Sorry
by: Debbie T

I was at the dog park yesterday when a dog twice the size of Buddha attacked him for no reason. He had him pinned against the fence and had Buddha's head in his mouth. The owner could not get her dog off of him and was pulling her dog which I was terrified that it would cause more damage. I had to punch the dog in the back to get him to let go. He has cuts above his eye and all around his neck but he is ok. I was so fortunate that he did not loose his eye. I will be carrying pepper spray and if another dog does this again I will not hesitate to spray the dog. Also the vet told me the best way to get a dog to stop and release is to poke him in the eye with your thumb. You can buy pepper spray specific to dogs on line. I will not leave home without it ever again.
Buddha is almost three and is a big Boston, 32 lbs and was fighting for his life. If he did not, I don't know if he would even be alive now. I am in the process of getting this aggressive dog banned from the park. I have met other dogs with one eye and they compensate. Boston's are so smart and I am sure he will overcome this. You just need to protect him from this happening again as I will with my dog. You never know when this will happen and it has happened to my dog twice now. I can't imagine how upset you must be. I compare my love and attachment to my dog to how I feel about my children.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Dog Fight

Oh that is so terrible! Was it at a dog park? A neighbor? One of your other dogs?

Well, if it wasn't your dog then be sure to keep your Boston very close to you now. Always have him on a leash and hopefully you have a fenced back yard for him to go potty in.

No more Dog Parks.
