Breeding questions

This may be a double post, but I can't find my original. Hi, I was wondering if it would be a good idea to breed our BT pup. He is un-papered and red or seal colored. If we decide to breed him, we would be buying the dam as well. How old does the male have to be to safely sire a litter? How old must the female be to safely carry a litter?

We are debating this because we have heard that once the breeding is done and you go to neuter the sire, he still may mark and have other aggressive tendencies. Murphy is a great pup, but he has some dominance issues- he wants to be Alpha. His worst trait is his play biting, which we are really trying to correct. He doesn't mark yet, but he's only 16 weeks. I know this is really soon to breed, hence why I am asking so we know if we should pursue getting a female.

Well we have decided not to breed our BT puppy. His temperament is really good and he responds well to us. Instead of breeding we decided to get into rescue. Thanks for your thoughts.

age of breeding

I looked at both of your posts and your Boston is red, not seal. Seal in a Boston looks black and white until they are in the light and have a brownish cast. Very difficult to see in regular lighting but very noticeable in sunlight. Breeding a Boston should not be taken lightly and it's great your asking questions. You should not breed a male until they are at least 2 years old. If a male is allowed to breed to early it can create undesirable behaviors. Any male left intact will mark territory. This doesn't mean that he will mark in your house but of course that's a chance you take. In my opinion and experience Females should not be bred until at least the 2nd heat cycle. This should not be decided on that alone. A responsible breeder takes into consideration the maturity of the female. For example I have one that is 2 years old. She has had 4 and I have not bred her yet. In my opinion & experience she was not ready.

Females mark as well after their 2nd heat. One of the biggest reasons for waiting is you should breed for improvement of standard and temperament. You will not know what this is until maturity. My best advice to anyone considering this is to ask why you want to. Breeding correctly takes years of study to know what makes the breed. Long term goal should be improving our standard.
