Bostons with red eye

by Mindi

My brother and I just both bought Bostons and both have what the vet calls "cherry eye" It appears that the inside of the lower lid is squishing out and red. Our vet said that it would go away on its own. Is this true and how long should I wait?

Cherry eye
by: Alison

Cherry is a congenital defect and is common in Bostons. Occasionally the gland will return to the normal size but more commonly it remains enlarged and causes recurrent conjuctivitis. It can be treated with antibiotics/ or steroids but usually needs surgery.I would go with what the Vet says and see if it corrects itself first.

Cherry eye

I have a boston terrier that had a cherry eye. First it was in her right eye for about 3 days then the next morning it was gone. Then about 1 week later the left eye did the same I waited 3 days and it didn't get any better. Bottom line was that it did need to be removed so it wouldn't cause her any problems later. I would take them to the vet. Also please ask to be refered to a eye specialist they are WAY better than your local vet that REALLY DOESN'T DEAL WITH THOSE TYPE OF PROBLEMS ON A REGULAR BASIS.
It is very important not to have your pup put out for very long cause it could be deadly for them. See a SPECIALIST. The surgery was going to cost about $300 to $450 thur my local vet but when asking for the eye specialist I found that the corrective surgery was only $125.

Red Eye-Very Common
by: Jayme

It is very common for Bostons to get cherry eye. My Boston gets them all the time. They usually last about 1 to 2 days, I have been told if it last longer then 4 days you should take them in. I haven't had to do that yet.
