Boston Terrier Training Suggestions?

by Marina

Hi,
We are thinking of one day having a Boston Terrier in our life, but we are hesitant right now to go ahead because we worry we won't be successful housetraining our dog and the whole thing becomes a hassle instead of enjoyable and giving a dog a good life. We see other people enjoying their pets and really love dogs, it's just going through the training period, that we feel we fail..so for now we wait until we feel it's right and keep researching.
Any suggestions?
Marina and Scott

Know how you feel
by: Tasha

We are looking at getting a BT but being a stay at home mom with a busy husband, and two young kids I too am feeling a bit nervous about training our puppy! All i can say is I think that, that's a good feeling, meaning we'll want to do well. Just remember if your heart is in the right place it'll all work out. More then anything I think the process will be a lesson in patience and putting things in perspective! Good luck:)

If you really hate the training process then adopt a Boston that is already trained. You can visit them and take your time to make sure they are already trained. Some owners really do have their unexpected problems and need to find a new home for their well-behaved pet. There is usually a Boston Terrier Rescue group near every city and there are websites (Craigslist.org for one) that owners can list their pet needing re-homing. Also, sometimes reputable breeders are wanting to change out their "stock" and these adults are great pets! Most adopted Bostons settle in with their new owners very easily and make very loving and loyal pets. Just take your time and don't let anyone tell you it has to be TODAY.

Otherwise, take a couple of months to learn about training. Visit a breeder, especially one that shows their dogs, and chat about training, personalities, dos and don'ts, etc... You can probably find more than one that will correspond with you online via email, or find one in your area. Visit the AKC website. There is a list of breeders in your area there and perhaps some training tips too.

One suggestion: if you are set on getting a young puppy, check out his parents. Make sure the mother and father have obedient and loving personalities. Genetics is half the battle. The other half is your training skills.
