Bostons and Vomiting
by: Merk

As for the foamy discharge, that is mucus. Bostons cant sneeze normally. They sneeze backwards and the mucas goes to their stomachs then they vomit it up. I give my BT benadryl for adults. My BT vomits when he is playing. He is very active and quit the athlete. Bostons will play till they die (quite literally). It's important to limit there play time. When my Boston starts to get out of breath or starts sneezing I stop the play time and we rest. Sometimes I need the rest mor than he does.

Now for tose who vomit after drinking, try putting only a little water in several bowls. This will keep them from drinking to much at time. They vomit because they are burping.

I'm not an expert but I do have a very good Dr. that has given us this advice and it has worked. The only problem I have with my BT now is when he is playing with other dogs. He's having so much fun I just cant stop him.

BT vomiting
by: Anonymous

Our BT is three years old. Occasionally she will have a few months of throwing up and then it stops. I think it may have to do with her level of activity. In the winter months, when she is not as active outside, this has been happening. She rarely throws up during the rest of the year. She is otherwise well and has no signs of being malnourished. It seems that this a peculiar problems related to these dogs (like the "reverse sneeze"). At least in our dog it does not seem to be pathological.

Boston Terrier Vomiting
by: Lisa

We have a 4 year old Boston Terrier and she vomited probably 3 times a day every day for about 3 years. I was so frustrated, the vets all wanted to do all these expensive things to try and figure out what was wrong with her. I tried many different foods, did a lot of research about different things, countless hours on the internet.
I came to the conclusion that the less food I gave her the less she would vomit but didn't do well on the dog foods that had things like corn or grain in it, so she was getting only protein dog food. I think she was getting too much protein. So I needed a way to fatten her up. I started adding cooked rice to her dog food. And that was all it took. I started giving her a tablespoon with her food and gradually increased it, and now she gets about a cup of cooked rice every morning and night with her dog food. She hasn't vomited since, even from the first day with only 2 tablespoons of rice. Its been about 6 glorious months and I don't ever worry about it anymore. She is not stinky anymore either which is a bonus. I find she is better on the Uncle Bens converted white rice. I've tried the sticky rice and the brown rice. I think the brown rice has too much fibre and makes her poop more, and the sticky rice made her have looser stool. I feed her Acana dog food made with fish, its a grain free dog food. I think the key is no grain and not so much protein for them, not sure about her only having fish but I don't dare try anything else. She gets 1/2 cup twice a day, so not very much. When I started with the rice, I also gradually increased her dog food, I had her up to 1 cup a day twice a day but at that amount she vomited so I dropped the amount down until I felt she was getting enough and not vomiting. She never gets anything else either, she can chew rawhides but she gets terrible diarrhea from them so she only gets those when really necessary. So I hope this helps someone, and works as well for your Boston as it did for mine.

my BT throws up too
by: Anonymous

I have had my boston terrier since i was four. she is about eight years old now, and has a habit of throwing up. She doesn't do it that often, but when she does i try to clean it up, and she has tried to eat it before. My mom tells me to just let her do that, but i feel that i have to clean it up. To help her throwing up problem, i feed her dog food that helps digestion...like, Pro Plan Sensitive Skin & Stomach Canned food....she did not throw up when i fed her that, but i recently ran out of it, and she threw up, and got gassy...back to the store!

Boston Puppy throwing up food and water
by: Sheena

My Boston puppy has been with us 2 months. When we got him we were told by the breeder his brother had a stomach condition, but it was caused my him swallowing a toy when he was younger.. But recently about 2 months later, our puppy is throwing up all of his water and food. He drinks a large amount of water then throws up 2 minutes later. I know he is a puppy, but lately he has been sleeping an abnormal amount too. Any suggestions to put my nerves at ease!

Vomiting BT
by: Anonymous

I have also the puking BT. There are a lot of things that you can do. First of all, don't attempt to feed any dry food, especially kibble. Secondly, extend the feeding times to a maximum period. For example, feed at 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Three times a day is too much, you need to put time between feedings. Do not feed any treats or chewable bones, like rawhide. Try feeding Eagle Pack brand, chicken/oat mix. You almost have to feed a purie diet, going so far as to utilize an avocardo masher to mix/crush the food even more. Do not overfeed! Do not exercise after feeding, no jumping, playing. Elevate during feeding, sit in a chair and hold a plate for your baby. After feeding, stand the dog on his hind quarters, and "burp" him or her.

Our dog has a piloric valve problem, has had it since age 7 weeks, now over 13 months, and is very strong, but still prone to vomitting. Will vomit a few times a week still, especially when more active. But is very healthy none the less, but it has been a lot of work, and because we can't give him treats, he is hard to train. At some point if he improves, you might want to try a "pill pocket" by Greenie as a treat, but our puppy has trouble with these also. There is a medication for piloric valve, it is a syrup, but I don't think it is overly useful. I think the biggest thing is to understand you can only feed twice a day, and not to overfeed, and no snacks! Good luck.

vomiting and breathing problems
by: Lynn

I have two 6-month old boston terriers. They were having difficulty breathing and constantly had a white, foamy discharge from their nostrils and would have to open their mouths to get enough oxygen. They both were diagnosed with stenotic nares (pinched nostrils) and both underwent surgery to enlarge their nostrils. Boston terriers are known to have stenotic nares, along with elongated soft palates. One of my little bostons has a slightly elongated soft palate. This can interfere with eating, drinking, etc. This is probably why they are vomiting. There is surgery that will correct this...they have to be seen by special surgeon, as most veterinarians do not do this surgery. My two little ones are doing so much better since having surgery. Also, in order to check the soft palate, they almost have to be under anesthesia.

boston terriers do throw up!
by: Anonymous

It is common for boston terriers to throw up. I have two and only one of mine has that problem. He has been doing it for almost two months now and the doctor said there is nothing he can do for him and that he should grow out of it.

Boston Terrier Throwing Up
by: Rella

I have had Boston Terriers for the past twelve or so years. My first Boston (deceased) threw up all of the time. My second didn't throw up as much (still have him). My third threw up all of the time. She never outgrew it. She died because of epilepsy last year. Three weeks ago I adopted a female Boston from someone who didn't want her anymore and had put her outside. She is one and a half years old. She has thrown up about twelve times already today.

I have asked my vet about this before and he said it is common in Bostons. Some outgrow it and some don't. They cannot drink too much water. As soon as they drink, some of the food they have eaten last usually comes up. Mostly water is thrown up with saliva and some parts of food. I try to regulate how much water my Boston drinks, but she is thirsty and I feel sorry for her and have to let her drink some. Don't know what else to do. This gets to be very frustrating and today I am very disgusted with the situation. I do not want to constantly be cleaning up this throw-up. I feel sorry for my Boston because she knows now that it upsets me and I know that she is not doing this on purpose.

Noooooo
by: Anonymous

Throwing up is not normal ( 2 days ) no way, I would take my dog to the vet. I always say better safe than sorry. I wouldn't want to take the chance of losing a family member. VET call!!
