Boston Terrier Size

by Bryan
(Boston MA)

Hey Guys first time post-

I have a Boston that is almost 4 months and only weighs 6 lbs. Is this normal? He is getting the recommended amount of Science Diet 3 times daily so I was just wondering if anyone else has a small Boston?

smallest pup in litter...
by: Anonymous

i have a deposit down on a 6 week old boston girl. she's only 1.5 lbs right now, she and another were the smallest of 6 puppies. mom is 16 lbs, dad is 20. breeder thinks she'll be between 10 and 14 lbs. said she just started eating puppy food and will catch up. anyone else have a similar situation and have an idea how big she'll get, or concerns about her health? i'm ok with a smaller dog, just curious, and want her to be healthy!

On AKC Standards on Boston Terriers size
by: Anonymous

The AKC Standards will let you know the "norm" of what a Boston Terrier should look like. These "other" breeding persons that do not know the basics of breeding dogs or a specific breed so they can "make" new rare tiny Boston Terrier can also make deformations, and genetic problems that will stay in a bloodline for years to come. The breeder that is not an educated breeder does not educate themselves or get the knowledge needed to breed dogs. To breed stay within the standards of 1 breed, test for the genetic problems that you can, pick the best of litters health & standards to breed, get that down first then you will not hand over years of health problems when you hand over that special puppy to a family.

by: Anonymous

I've had different bostons in the past, but i only have one now. Her name is Chloe shes only 5 months and yesterday at the vet she weighed in at 7lbs...she seems soo much smaller than the bostons i used to have, but she's a real cutie-pie =) . She's brindle with half her face all white and the other half with the regular patch on the eye...she has a little tiny corkscrew tail....and she looks cut in her little pink spiked and jeweled color.

Is there anywhere we could view photos of some of these tiny and large BT's? With a way to ID our dogs by the posts we have left. I would love to see some of the different sizes. Amanda

ed. - visitors can post photos using the submission form on the page that discusses size. Photos can't be added through comments on someone else's submission, though.

BT weight
by: Crystal

I've owned bts for 25yrs. I have seen them anywhere from 10lbs up to 40lbs. My current bt weight varies from 23 up to 26(his heaviest). He seems to hover at about 25. Depends on how much exercise and treats he gets. I personally prefer the "larger" bostons. Seems to me that over the years these bts have been bred down in size considerably. Back when the breed got started 35 to 40lbs was the norm.

Go Go Gizmo 5 Months 3lbs May well be the Smallest NATURAL Boston EVER!
by: Made In America Bostons

My Tiny Male Boston Gizmo now 5 Months old & only 3 lbs he May well be the Smallest NATURAL Boston EVER! hes so funny to watch bounce around we had to custom make all of his outfits because XXS is to big for him, hes been to the vet several times to well check him and they are amazed at his perfect conformation and beautiful color coat I'm shocked he has no health issues due to his insanely small size hes less than 6 in at the high point of his shoulder that's small.. We think he may make 5 lbs but the vet says no way his feet are to tiny to support that kind of growth pattern he will be the size of a full grown chi wee yea me I love bostons and always wished for a chi wee sized one and hes now arrived. sure wish I could show you all a photo . he's a hoot!

ed. you can post a photo by creating your own submission (just not in the comments of someone else's post). :-)

by: Brians Boston/Bozzly

My 14 month old AKC Boston Terrier was weighed about 2 weeks ago and he weighed in at 30 lbs. I have been told by numerous people that he is huge. I am starting to agree with them from all the small Bostons on this website. If any body has information about record, please feel free to post to this site.

My little Boston is only 11 lbs and she is 2.3 years old. I knew when I got her she would be small and I chose her for that reason. I LOVE LOVE LOVE her! My older Boston is obese at 25lbs, and that is my fault for giving her people food. I will never make that mistake again.

Have a 3 yr old male who is 15 lbs. Was told by breeder when I purchased him he would be a small man, since I am 5'4" man, that worked for me. A good friend has a female at about 23 lbs and they work well together. Best dog I have ever had.

I have a 10 month old brindle and white spayed female who only weighs 5 lbs. Lola is very active and has a VERY healthy appetite. She has been checked by a couple different veterinarians, blood checked to make sure she does not have a genetic disorder making her be so petite; all is good. She is very happy and healthy. She is a tiny bundle of pure joy. She loves to play with other dogs and absolutely loves to curl up and cuddle as often as she can. She is very people oriented, has to be everywhere I go. Luckily I have the luxury of being able to bring her to work with me. Love every minute Lola and I get to spend together.

14 week old boston terrier
by: Hawthorn

I have a beautiful little boston terrier that is 14 weeks old, weighs 12lbs and is 11inch high.
I did not expect her to get this big as her mom and dad are only 12 and 16lbs each. Plus only 13inchs tall. I believe she will be a big girl, but i still love her anyways. All bostons can be different because you have to look at there grandparents/ great grandparents. the genes they can get looks/ height/ weight...etc. Can come from any family member down the line.

Science Diet
by: Anonymous

Science Diet is, unfortunately, crap.

Read the label. Switch to Natural Balance Organic, Blue Buffalo or Organix. It's the best thing you could ever do for your dog (especially when he/she is growing). Unfortunately, because of the massive and disgusting ammount of hormones (fed to the animal which is the meal source in your dog's food),corn gluten meal ect. in most dog probably have already stunted his or her growth.

Vets tend to know little to nothing about proper dog nutrition. They don't ever need to take a course on it in Vet school...and if they have it was most likely funded and run by one of the major dog food corperations (Science Diet, Purina, Iams, Pedegree ect.), which are all crap.

Tiny female boston
by: Amanda

I have 3 bostons-all female. My youngest is 10months old and weighs 14lbs., my 5 yr. old weighs 13lbs. and I have a 2 yr. old female that only weighs 7 lbs. Her parents weigh 14 and 15lbs. and have had 3 litters-no other pups have turned out this small but there have been a couple that have turned out around 10lbs. She is perfectly healthy and is that weight AFTER being spayed. People always think she is a puppy from one of the other females. I joke about her being my "teacup" boston. She is an absolute doll!

My new puppy
by: Anonymous

I just purchased a "runt" from a local breeder. The only reason why I got her was to hopefully help her in becoming a miracle. She is 8 weeks old and she weighs exactly 1 lb. I hope everything turns out okay, she is active, eating and a little vicious thing. We love her and doing whatever we can to make sure she stays healthy and continues to prosper.

small bostons
by: Anonymous

My Boston had a litter 8 weeks ago, strange thing for us was as they grew there was an incredible difference in size. They range from the largest at 6 lbs and the smallest at. 90 lbs. They have been to the vet and he has said they are all fine, but he was also surprised at the size difference. We are holding on to the little one just a little while longer though, she is so precious. Hope some one will love her despite her small size. Worried someone may want to breed her to get a smaller version of Boston and I'm a little mixed on breeding her since she is so small, don't know if that would be in her best interest.

Big Boston, little Boston
by: Anonymous

My 3 year old Boston, Bowser, weighs in at 35 lbs...he is pure Boston, but somehow has the giant gene. We love every ounce of him - he is awesome. On the other hand, our baby Cookie, who is 5 months old, is only 7 pounds. Because Bowser is so big, she looks extremely small. We're hoping she will at least double her size by the time she's done growing.

I have a Boston that weighs 36 lbs and love every inch of him. He is by no means overweight, just big for the breed I guess. He is AKC registered, are their other larger Bostons out there or do I have the only one?

Check with your vet
by: Jenai

If you are concerned about his weight ask your vet. Our male is is five months and two weeks ago the vet weighed him at 11.7 lbs. It may seem like a lot but he looks very lean and I was concerned that he was also too thin (before I knew his weight) but the vet said he's very muscular and absolutely healthy. He told me as long as you can feel their ribs when you grab their sides they're fine and it's very easy for this breed to become overweight.
I would not be too concerned about him being too thin as long as your vet isn't. If you are still unsure get a second opinion from another vet.

I would also recommend changing his food. Many people and vets will tell you that Science diet is good but when you look at the ingredients you can clearly see it's not that great. The reason why vets push it is because they get deals from the company, kind of like your doctor giving you samples of a certain drug.
This site has a grading system for foods that I found really helpful. I feed my boy 'Wellness Super Five mix just for puppies' which is great and not too expensive for a natural food at $21.00 for a 6 lb bag
Most commercial foods are just filler and don't help your dog gain the weight they need or provide the proper nutrients so it all comes out in their poop.
Here is the link to the rating system:

Boston should weight no less then 10lbs no more then 25LB....of course there are some that weigh less or more but this is AKC show standards and what breeders should be aiming to keep.

13months at 6lbs!
by: Anonymous

I have a 6lb 13 month old female. Perfectly healthy and beautiful in everyway....I was wondering about this as well. She was my future showing project but when she maxed out at 6lbs my plans where ruined....oh well she is still the most beautiful boston in the world! What is the lighest boston weight allowed by AKC? There should be a limit. Breeders should make sure they stick to the guidlines for the standards of this breed so that it does not get destroyed. I find it sad that these people are breeding "micro bostons" on's not what a boston is about. I think AKC needs to set a limit on the smalled class(size) of bostons.

mini bostons?!?

On the internet the other day it said that there will be a new breed of boston terriers called minis i don't believe this is so i will be looking it up and learning all i can. the characteristics of the mini bostons are they can be as little as 5 pounds full grown, the big eyes, short stocky legs, hygenic, cuddly, etc......i have found one site on these dogs they are very rare and just begun registering them but who knows??? when they are born they are usually less than 2 pounds and very hard to breed.

Our Little Pinky
by: Anonymous

We just got our 4th Boston yesterday! We love Bostons. All of our Bostons weigh 15+ pounds with the exception of Tinkerbell who is around 10 pounds or so. Our new addition, Pinky, is 16 weeks old and weighs a whopping 1.5 pounds. She is absolutely tiny, but beautiful. She has hypoglycemia and some problems with her back leg turning out. The breeder did not know what to do with her; so we "rescued" her from the unknown. We're going to try to fatten her up. The breeder had been feeding her human baby food. We're trying ground up puppy food with puppy milk replacement and a little Karo Syrup about 4-5 times a day. We have to feed her with our fingertips. We hope we can see this little girl through!

size of Bostons
by: Izzy

My Boston, Izzy, is 6.5 months and just hit 14 lbs. On July 15, she was only 6 lbs, 7 oz and I was told she probably would not surpass 10 lbs.
She had a major growth spurt between 4 and 6 months. She is quite active and pure muscle which is why I think she weighs more than she looks. She is dainty but also solid.
Your puppy will grow into it's own, in it's own time.

Small guy 14 weeks 2.2 pounds
by: Amy

We have a small black/brindle/white guy that we just got. E.T. is 14 weeks and 2.2 pounds when I weighed him yesterday. He is the smallest Boston Terrier I have ever seen. His brother and sister are triple his size when I seen them last. Both of his parents are about 10-12 pounds.

Small Boston
by: Anonymous

My two Bostons were born 9/12/08 and now one weighs 22 lbs and the smaller one weighs about 14.7 lbs. They both had to have surgery for Stenotic Nares (narrow nostrils) and the smaller one also has a slightly elongated soft palate, which the dr who did their surgery said he didn't think would have to be surgically corrected. After the stenotic nares surgery, the smaller one began eating much better and started gaining weight and was doing so much better.

The parents of these two both weighed about 25 lbs and Rocky, my larger one, will be their size, but Rosco, the smaller of the two will probably be in the smaller boston group, which is 10 to 15 lbs. I would pay close attention to how much he eats...I allowed my smaller one to eat as much as he wanted and I thought he was getting enough food, but the vet was really concerned his weight. He steadily gained weight after his surgery and is really strong and healthy now. The surgery made a world of difference in him. Before surgery, he had foamy discharge, sometimes watery, from his nostrils and he made a lot of noise when sleeping. Also, he would get tired when running and playing. Hope some of this info helps.

Really small
by: Tricia and Diamond

I got diamond when she was 4 weeks old and she was so small that a coke can was way bigger than her. She has now been with us for 2 and half months and is still very small. She weighs about 3 lbs and about the size of the coke can now. The vet says this is rare and she is extremely healthy and playful. We keep a close eye on her and we watch where we step with her being as small as she is but, we love her despite her size.

Small but well
by: Josee + Guy

Our Claypool was 4.4Lb(2Kg) at 3 1/2 month(75days) and he seems very well, playful at his times, calm and obedient at our times. eats well, houseclean and regular. No health problem. Frisky though.
So we will have a mini genius Boston and we are cool with it.

Small Boston puppy
by: Anonymous

I have 2 Boston terriers, born Sept. 12, 2008, one of them weighs 12 lbs already and his brother only weighs about 6 lbs. I was really concerned about the smaller one, but he is very healthy and I'm paying close attention to how much he eats. I give him as much as he will eat 3 times daily. I feed them Wellness puppy food. The breeder informed me that all the puppies were different sizes and there was one smaller than my smallest one.

Bostons come in 3 different acceptable sizes.
15 pounds and under, 15-20 pounds and 20-25 pounds. I have four Bostons all different sizes but none that small. I always wanted a little one but seem to keep getting these big ones!
As long as the Vet says he is healthy he is fine, just little. My friend has a little guy that is 4 years old and weighs 6 pounds. He is the cutest little thing. He of course has no idea he is that small.
