Boston terrier seizures

My boston was sitting in the sun one day and i just started watching him have a seizure. (His eyes looked like they were going to pop out, his mouth kept shaping in weird positions, and his feet and toes were jumping and stuff). After that was over with he looked okay and acted the same but i wanted to make sure he is on the safe side.

Young Boston

Jack, my one and a half-year old Boston, was put down on Sep 23, 2011. Not a day goes by I don't think about him and feel the guilt for sending him to "rainbow heaven". His grand mal seizures started massively after his first birthday for unknown causes. He was in the process of experimenting with the Pheno dosages, but his seizures acted up so often he became static one day after over 15 grand mals within a 24hr period. My wife and I decided that we loved him so much that if we didn't stop these episodes now, not only would it break us financially, but also, he would not live the quality of life thereafter. We have no idea what was causing them (even the vet mentioned it probably was something worse than sporadic epilepsy), but my advice is to plan accordingly even if you have a healthy Boston. R.I.P. my Jacko.

Boston Terrior Seizures
by: Anonymous

I have a 4 yr old Boston Terrier who has seizures. After her first seizure we rushed her to the vet. She was tested and there was no cause (epileptic). She was prescribed phenobarbital. These seizures are the most scary things I have seen in my life, however my vet says they do not hurt them, and don't usually kill them. I guess he hasn't read this site. I was unaware of this issue with Boston Terriers until I came across this site. I am sorry for all of yalls losses. I can only say I hope i have caught Princesses seizures in time. She is the joy in our life and the sunshine on a rainy day.

our Sandee began having seizures and recently passed away
by: Frances

Our eight year old boston terrier Sandee died a week ago. We were treating her for respiratory problems she'd had most of her life, but always responded well to medications. She began having seizures at night about six or eight weeks ago. The vet said they were not seizures only fainting spells. But she would arch her back, twist and stiffen and her eyes would bulge out of her head. The seizures didn't seem to harm her, but I wondered how long they could continue. The final seizure was on the floor of the family room, and my son came running up the stairs with her in his arms. She had stopped breathing, and a few moments later her heart stopped beating. My vet did not appear to know anything about Boston's and seizures, and I only started finding out about it after Sandee passed away. Sandee was the best dog in the world, and I hope more research can be done to help these wonderful dogs.

Seizures
by: Karen

I just read your post and I have a 9 year old Boston Terrier who after all these years just suffered 2 seizures saturday night. I would suggest that you have yours checked out by the vet and let them do bloodwork. The worst thing for a Boston is the heat especially if they are prone to having seizures. Everything that I have read recently says that your dog wont die from a seizure if they get treated for it. They really don't know what causes them to have a seizure and it looks worse than it is, I totally freaked out when Buster had his seizures but since he has been on phenobarbital he hasn't had another one. Buster is on a very low dose...he seems to be himself since they reduced the dosage...I pray all is well with your Boston, please get the bloodwork done and be at ease...GOd Bless you!

Sincerely,
Karen Benfield
