Boston Terrier Running away

HI all!! We have a happy, healthy 3 year old male bostie (neutered) who bolts if gates or doors are left open. He get's semi regular walks. Although he minds (pretty) well on other occasions he will not come back when called, or offered a treat, or anything. We have to chase him down. I'm so afraid of him getting hurt. Anyone else have a bostie like this? Or thoughts?
