Boston Terrier Rectum Prolapse

I have a 4 1/2 mo. old BT female who has just had a second complete rectum prolapse. With her first prolapse she was diagnosed with coccidiosis, which my vet said likely came from her breeder home since my kennel is above ground and washed out daily, and put on Albon Liquid and Panacur. She took her off of dry puppy food and put her on pedigree canned puppy watered down so her bowel movements would be softer since she was stitched after the surgery. After 3 weeks at home and doing fine, I returned her to the kennel with her sister where she had free-choice dry puppy food and a can of pedigree puppy in the evening. Sunday afternoon I found she had prolapsed again. My vet said this was likely an anatomical problem with the nerves going to her anus. Has anyone else had this problem with a BT? Her sister is fine.

Rectal prolapse and anal abscesses
by: Milo

I, too, have a BT who has had rectal prolapse for 3 out of his 4 years of life. He often howls in pain when having a bowel movement. He also has had recurring anal abcesses requiring repeated courses of antibiotics and steroids. He has had 2 episodes of having heavy sedation to manually express his anal glands. Does anyone out there know if the two problems are related? Has anyone had anal gland problems with their BT and how did you deal with it? I'm at my wit's end with repeated recurring abcesses and I worry if this will result in shortening his life span. I would be devastated if I lost my little buddy. (Nicknamed perrocito loco, or crazy little dog in Spanish).
